Egypt’s antiquities community is facing a major shock after a priceless golden bracelet disappeared from the conservation lab of the Egyptian Museum located at Cairo’s famous Tahrir Square. The news has left experts, historians, and museum officials deeply concerned, as this rare artefact is part of Egypt’s treasured heritage.
The bracelet, which once belonged to King Psusennes I, the third pharaoh of Egypt’s 21st dynasty, is considered one of the most important pieces of ancient Egyptian history. It was meant to travel to Rome soon as part of the “Treasures of the Pharaohs” exhibition, showcasing Egypt’s rich and majestic past to the world.
Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Takes Immediate Action
Following the disappearance, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities quickly referred the case to the police and the Public Prosecution. In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that all relevant authorities were notified immediately and necessary legal steps were taken without delay.

The ministry also announced the creation of a specialised committee. This team’s task is to carefully review and inventory every artefact in the conservation lab to ensure no other items are missing or at risk. As an added precaution, images of the missing bracelet have been sent to all archaeological units at airports, seaports, land crossings, and border points across the country to prevent its illegal movement or smuggling.
Details About the Bracelet
Archaeologist Ahmed Amer provided more information about the stolen artefact. He explained that the bracelet weighs around 600 grams and is made entirely of solid gold. It was last seen inside a special restoration lab while staff were preparing it for shipment to Italy for the exhibition.
Amer said the bracelet’s sudden disappearance has triggered thorough investigations involving all staff members who had access to it. This includes employees who last handled the artefact during the packing and restoration process.
National Heritage at Stake
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has emphasized that the case is being treated as a matter of national importance. Losing a priceless item like this not only affects Egypt’s reputation but also endangers the country’s cultural heritage.
Investigators are carefully reviewing museum surveillance footage to determine what happened. However, a significant challenge has emerged: the restoration labs do not have surveillance cameras. This lack of video coverage has created a major gap in the investigation and makes it harder to understand whether the disappearance was due to theft, negligence, or an unfortunate mistake.
Steps Being Taken to Locate the Bracelet
Authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their search. Apart from reviewing staff movements and interview records, the ministry has intensified checks at all border points to prevent the bracelet from leaving the country. Archaeological units, airport security, customs officers, and police officials have all been alerted.
Experts stress that the bracelet is extremely valuable, not only because of its gold content but because of its historical significance. Pieces belonging to King Psusennes I are rare, and losing such an item would be an irreparable blow to Egypt’s rich archaeological collection.
Public Awareness and Cooperation
As part of the investigation, the ministry has also circulated detailed images and descriptions of the bracelet to the public. Officials hope that anyone who might come across the artefact or have information about it will report it immediately. Public vigilance is considered crucial in recovering such a significant piece of history.
Challenges in Protecting Cultural Artefacts
This incident has highlighted serious security concerns in Egypt’s conservation labs. While the Egyptian Museum has always been known for its vast collection and expertise in preserving ancient treasures, the lack of surveillance in critical areas has created vulnerabilities. Museum officials now face the challenge of balancing accessibility for researchers and staff with stronger security measures to protect national treasures.
Experts suggest that museums worldwide should use advanced tracking, digital inventory systems, and surveillance cameras to ensure such priceless objects remain safe. The current situation serves as a wake-up call for Egypt and other nations that house rare historical items.
International Attention Expected
Given the bracelet was intended for an international exhibition in Rome, this disappearance is likely to attract global attention. The “Treasures of the Pharaohs” exhibition aims to celebrate Egypt’s ancient history and showcase its finest artefacts to the world. Losing such an important piece could not only affect Egypt’s cultural reputation but also impact diplomatic and cultural exchanges related to the exhibition.
Historical Significance of King Psusennes I
King Psusennes I ruled during Egypt’s 21st dynasty, and his treasures are considered some of the most exceptional examples of ancient Egyptian craftsmanship. Jewellery like this bracelet provides historians and archaeologists with insights into the skills, culture, and traditions of ancient Egypt. Its loss is therefore not just a material loss but also a loss of valuable knowledge about Egypt’s past.
Investigation Ongoing
As of now, the bracelet’s location remains unknown. Authorities continue to conduct interviews, examine records, and coordinate with security agencies to trace its whereabouts. The ministry assures that every effort will be made to recover this precious artefact and bring those responsible to justice if foul play is involved.
Archaeologists, historians, and the public are anxiously following the developments. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding cultural treasures and the responsibility that comes with preserving a country’s heritage for future generations.
