HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently visited the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This phase, a key project in Dubai’s renewable energy journey, is being developed under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. The total investment in this phase is estimated at AED 5.5 billion.
During his visit, Al Tayer was accompanied by Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, along with senior officials, engineers, and experts involved in the project.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park: A Global Leader
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is recognized as the world’s largest single-site solar park. It has been implemented by DEWA using the IPP model, which allows private companies to invest, construct, and operate parts of the project. This model not only encourages private sector participation but also ensures efficiency and world-class standards in execution.
The solar park is central to Dubai’s vision of a sustainable future. It supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. Both strategies aim to provide Dubai’s entire power needs from clean energy sources by the year 2050. The solar park plays a crucial role in making this goal achievable.
Progress of Phase 6
During the site visit, Al Tayer received detailed briefings on the progress of Phase 6 from officials at Shuaa Energy 4. This phase has reached approximately 68.59% completion, with 1,000 MW already operational out of the total planned 1,800 MW.
Currently, over 2.236 million photovoltaic (PV) solar panels have been installed, and the total number of panels is expected to reach around 3.959 million when the phase is fully completed next year. These solar panels are designed to capture sunlight efficiently and convert it into electricity to power thousands of homes.
Expanding Dubai’s Clean Energy Capacity
At present, the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park has a production capacity of 3,860 MW, and an additional 800 MW is currently under construction. By 2030, the total capacity of the solar park will increase to 7,260 MW, surpassing the original target of 5,000 MW. This expansion means that clean energy will contribute about 34% of Dubai’s total energy needs, a significant step towards a sustainable future.
Advanced Technology in Phase 6
The sixth phase of the solar park incorporates the latest solar technologies. It uses bifacial solar photovoltaic panels along with single-axis tracking systems. Bifacial panels capture sunlight from both sides, which increases energy output, while single-axis trackers allow the panels to follow the sun’s movement across the sky, further enhancing efficiency.
The project covers an area of 20 square kilometers, which is roughly the size of 2,800 football fields. Once fully operational, Phase 6 will provide clean electricity to approximately 540,000 homes, significantly contributing to Dubai’s energy requirements while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Environmental Impact
Phase 6 is expected to make a major impact on reducing carbon emissions. It is estimated that the project will help cut around 2.36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to planting millions of trees. This contribution is crucial in combating climate change and promoting sustainable living in Dubai.
Economic and Social Benefits
Beyond its environmental impact, the solar park also brings economic and social advantages. The IPP model encourages private sector investment, creates job opportunities, and fosters innovation in renewable energy technologies. It also helps stabilize Dubai’s energy supply, ensuring that residents and businesses have access to reliable and clean electricity.
Vision for a Clean Energy Future
Dubai has set an ambitious target of meeting 100% of its energy needs from clean sources by 2050. Projects like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park are instrumental in achieving this vision. By continuously expanding solar power capacity and using the latest technologies, Dubai is setting a global example in renewable energy adoption.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer emphasized the importance of this project during his visit, highlighting the solar park’s role in achieving sustainability, promoting innovation, and creating a greener future for the Emirate.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with its sixth phase under development, represents a major milestone in Dubai’s clean energy journey. With billions in investment, millions of solar panels, and the latest technology, the solar park is set to transform Dubai’s energy landscape.
By 2030, as the total capacity reaches 7,260 MW, the solar park will provide clean electricity to millions, reduce carbon emissions significantly, and move Dubai closer to its net-zero carbon goal for 2050. The project is a shining example of how innovation, sustainability, and strategic planning can create a cleaner and brighter future for all residents.
