Dubai is taking big steps to make its roads safer and more comfortable for everyone. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed two new pedestrian bridges on Sheikh Rashid Street and Al Mina Street. These bridges are part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which is one of the largest development projects in the city.
But this is just the beginning. The RTA has also built six more pedestrian and cyclist bridges across major streets in Dubai. Five of these will open before the end of this year, and the sixth will be ready in the first quarter of 2027. In addition, the RTA has planned 23 more pedestrian bridges that will be finished by 2030.
This effort shows Dubai’s strong commitment to keeping pedestrians safe and making the city more friendly for walkers and cyclists.

Why Are These Bridges Important?
According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of the RTA, the new bridges follow the vision of Dubai’s leaders. Their goal is to provide a safe and sustainable way for people to move around the city.
Al Tayer explained that these bridges help connect neighborhoods to important places like business centers, tourist spots, and public transport stations. By making it easier for people to walk and cycle, Dubai encourages residents to use greener and healthier ways of travel.
The number of pedestrian bridges and underpasses in Dubai has grown a lot over the years. Back in 2006, there were only 26 pedestrian bridges. By the end of 2024, that number increased to 177 bridges, which is a growth of 581%. Now, with the new plan, 23 more bridges will be added by 2030.
Safer Roads, Fewer Accidents
The RTA’s work has already shown great results. Pedestrian accidents and deaths have reduced sharply. In 2007, there were 9.5 pedestrian deaths for every 100,000 people. By 2024, this number dropped to just 0.3 deaths, which means a 97% reduction in fatalities.
People are also happier with the new bridges and crossings. Surveys show that pedestrian satisfaction levels in Dubai have reached 88%.
At the same time, more people are choosing to walk and cycle. In 2023, there were 307 million pedestrian trips, and in 2024, the number rose to 326 million, showing a growth of 6%. Cycling also became more popular, with trips increasing from 44 million in 2023 to 46.6 million in 2024, a 5% increase.
Dubai’s Goal: Zero Fatalities
Al Tayer made it clear that pedestrian safety is one of RTA’s biggest priorities. Dubai has set an ambitious goal called the Traffic Safety Strategy, which aims for Zero Fatalities on the roads.
The new pedestrian and cyclist bridges are designed with international standards. They are not just safe but also modern and attractive. Many bridges have lifts, staircases, fire alarm systems, firefighting systems, and remote monitoring. Some even have bike racks and special paths for cyclists and e-scooter users.

Plans for Nine More Bridges
The RTA has already planned to begin work on nine more bridges by 2028. These will include:
A bridge near Coca-Cola Arena
A bridge in Business Bay
Another on Sheikh Zayed Road near the Burj Khalifa area
Six bridges on Al Asayel Street
These projects will add to Dubai’s vision of becoming one of the safest and most pedestrian-friendly cities in the world.
A Safer and Greener Future for Dubai
The expansion of pedestrian and cyclist bridges is not just about safety. It is also about creating a better lifestyle for people in Dubai. By building modern, well-designed bridges, the RTA is encouraging people to walk, cycle, and use e-scooters instead of relying only on cars.
This move will reduce traffic congestion, lower pollution, and make Dubai a healthier, greener city. With more bridges and safer crossings, residents and visitors will find it easier to explore the city on foot or by bike.
Dubai’s journey from 26 pedestrian bridges in 2006 to 177 bridges by 2024 shows how serious the city is about road safety and sustainable travel. And with the upcoming projects, the future looks even brighter.
