Why ICIS Chose Dr Al Jaber
Dean Curtis, CEO of ICIS, praised Dr Al Jaber’s achievements, saying:
"We are delighted to announce this award to the UAE’s Dr Sultan Al Jaber, based on recognition from peers of transformational moves in the global chemical industry. He has been key in building significant downstream capabilities from ADNOC’s strength in crude oil and gas. His role in launching XRG, ADNOC’s international investment arm, shows a strong ambition to create a top-three global chemicals platform."
This clearly shows that Dr Al Jaber has not only managed ADNOC successfully but also transformed it into a global leader with innovative projects that go beyond traditional energy.
The Role of XRG in the Global Energy Future
Joseph Chang, Global Editor of ICIS Chemical Business, explained how ADNOC’s newly launched investment arm, XRG, will play a major role in shaping the future of energy.
"Through its newly launched investment vehicle XRG, ADNOC will also make investments in the energy systems of the future to ensure energy remains a catalyst for sustainable growth and development."
This means ADNOC, under Dr Al Jaber’s leadership, is not only focusing on today’s energy needs but also preparing for tomorrow’s challenges, such as sustainable growth, renewable energy, and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the global economy.

The Importance of the ICIS CEO of the Year Award
The ICIS CEO of the Year Award is unique in the chemical and energy industry. What makes it special is that the winner is not chosen by a committee or panel alone but by peers—other top leaders in the global chemical and energy industries.
The selection process includes votes from the ICIS Top 40 Power Players, a ranking of leaders who are driving the biggest positive impacts on their companies and the industry as a whole. These votes are based on clear criteria, such as:
Innovation – introducing new technologies, products, or processes.
Profitability and Shareholder Value – ensuring growth and financial success.
Projects and Investments – leading new ventures or expanding portfolios.
Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) – managing partnerships and business deals.
Advocacy – speaking for the industry on global platforms.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) – supporting sustainable and ethical business practices.
This makes the award more meaningful, as it reflects respect and admiration from peers at the highest level.
Past Winners of the Award
Over the years, several renowned global leaders have received this award. Some of them include:
Jim Fitterling, CEO of Dow (2022)
Martin Brudermuller, former CEO of BASF (2021)
Amin Nasser, CEO of Saudi Aramco (2020)
Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman of INEOS (2016)
Now, in 2025, Dr Sultan Al Jaber joins this prestigious list of leaders who have made historic contributions to the chemical and energy sectors.
