Many people feel tired all day even after a full night’s sleep. If you are one of them, it might not just be stress or lack of rest. Doctors say low iron levels in the body could be the reason behind constant fatigue. Iron is an essential nutrient that helps your body make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Without enough iron, your body may struggle to get enough oxygen to your organs and muscles, leaving you weak, tired, and dizzy.
Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, explains that constant tiredness can be an early sign of iron deficiency. He says, “Iron is important because it helps your body make hemoglobin. Without enough iron, your body can’t produce enough oxygen-carrying red blood cells. This makes you feel tired, weak, and sometimes dizzy.”
Certain people are at higher risk of low iron. Women with heavy periods, pregnant women, vegetarians, and individuals with medical conditions may develop iron deficiency more easily. If ignored, low iron can lead to iron deficiency anemia. This condition may cause additional symptoms such as pale skin, cold hands and feet, shortness of breath, or even unusual cravings for ice.
The good news is that low iron can be corrected. Dr Sood suggests including iron-rich foods in your daily diet. “Foods like spinach, red meat, lentils, beans, and fortified cereals are great sources of iron,” he says. Vitamin C can help your body absorb iron more effectively, so adding foods like oranges, tomatoes, or bell peppers with iron-rich meals can help.
If dietary changes are not enough, iron supplements may be recommended, but always consult a doctor before starting them. Dr Sood emphasises that if you feel tired for long periods, it is important to check your iron levels through a simple blood test. Early treatment can improve your energy and overall health.
Fatigue is a common problem, but it should not be ignored. Listening to your body and checking for underlying causes like iron deficiency can help you regain energy and stay healthy. By including iron-rich foods, getting enough rest, and consulting your doctor if needed, you can avoid the long-term effects of iron deficiency and improve your daily life.
