The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi has introduced a new set of guidelines that will overhaul the way construction information is displayed on project signboards. Effective from October 2024, these changes aim to enhance the accessibility and transparency of ongoing construction projects across the emirate, aligning with Abu Dhabi's vision of creating smarter cities.

The new regulations require the replacement of traditional construction signboards with QR codes. Previously, signboards displayed basic details such as the project name, construction company, and estimated timelines. Under the new system, these details will now be available digitally. When scanned, the QR code will direct the public, inspectors, and regulatory agencies to real-time updates and detailed specifications regarding the project. This includes essential information like the project's location, building permit status, number of floors, and a brief overview of the work being done.

The QR codes will be linked to the Municipal e-Permitting System (MePS), which ensures that the data is always accurate and up-to-date. This integration will allow anyone who scans the code to instantly verify critical information about the project, including changes to permit statuses, contractor details, and the companies involved in the work. This system will also make it easier for authorities to monitor construction projects and ensure compliance with local regulations.

To facilitate the transition, contractors are being instructed to update their signboards accordingly, with all new construction projects required to feature the QR codes prominently at the entrances to the building sites. This initiative is expected to streamline the verification process and improve public access to vital construction data.

By implementing these measures, the DMT is reinforcing its commitment to enhancing operational standards within the construction sector, making it easier for both the public and relevant authorities to track ongoing developments. This move also supports the emirate’s broader goals of modernizing infrastructure and improving the way information is shared within its urban planning frameworks.
