In the Al Najd agricultural zone of the Dhofar Governorate, wheat harvesting is in full swing, signaling a significant moment for Oman’s agricultural timeline for the 2025–2026 season. This endeavor is part of the nation's drive to bolster food security and elevate local farming.
Oversight by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has seen 51 farms engage in harvesting activities across a 6,408-acre landscape, showcasing a consistent rise in wheat production here.
Officials indicated that this initiative is in line with Oman’s wider goal of enhancing food self-sufficiency while minimizing import dependence. These ongoing efforts underline a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.
Eng. Said bin Musallam Al Kathiri noted that various wheat types such as Najd 1, Najd 2, Australian wheat, Qurayat 110, Qurayat 226, and Qurayat 308 are being grown, chosen for their compatibility with local conditions.
He further mentioned that the harvesting phase is projected to last around two months, allowing thorough management and collection of the crop across participating farms.
Farmers are being backed by the Ministry with cutting-edge machinery and technical support to optimize yields. In addition, the harvested produce will go to Oman Mills Company, with expectations set for an output surpassing 8,000 tons nationwide this season.
Officials reiterated that the initiative to grow wheat in the Najd area plays a crucial role in fostering agricultural sustainability, directly supporting Oman’s long-term objectives for food security and economic progress.
