To honor India’s rich handloom legacy and promote environmentally friendly fashion, the Delhi Government will organize a grand public event called Vastra Katha on August 6, 2025, in celebration of National Handloom Day.
This special event is being planned by the Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board (DKVIB) under the Industries Department. The goal is to encourage people to wear traditional, handmade clothes while also thinking about the environment.

Let’s take a detailed look at what the event is about, what you can expect there, and why it matters for India’s artisans and the planet.
Why This Event Is Important
At a press conference on Tuesday, Delhi Environment and Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa shared that the fashion industry has become one of the major causes of pollution and climate change. The industry, especially fast fashion, is harming the environment by producing massive amounts of waste and using chemicals that pollute water and air.
In contrast, handloom fabrics are made in eco-friendly ways and support rural communities, especially women. Mr. Sirsa said,
"Handloom is rooted in nature, environmentally friendly, and sustains rural livelihoods – especially for women. It's not just cultural heritage; it's climate action."
By holding this event, the Delhi Government aims to promote sustainable fashion and support India’s indigenous textile heritage. It is also a chance for young people to learn about the beauty of handloom and how it can be part of modern fashion too.
What Is Vastra Katha?
The name "Vastra Katha" means “Story of Cloth.” The event will highlight stories behind India’s traditional textiles and the artisans who make them. It will blend tradition, sustainability, and youth-led innovation.
Handloom Exhibition
There will be 24 curated stalls featuring rare and Geographical Indication (GI)-certified handloom fabrics from over 20 Indian states and union territories. These stalls will display textiles like:
Muga Silk from Assam
Pochampally Ikat from Telangana
Kanchipuram Silk from Tamil Nadu
Chanderi and Maheshwari from Madhya Pradesh
Kasavu from Kerala
Kantha Stitch from West Bengal
These are not just fabrics — they are part of India’s heritage, and each piece tells a story about the culture and tradition of its region.
Fashion Show Inspired by Vedic Civilization
Another exciting part of Vastra Katha will be a ramp walk or fashion show based on themes from Vedic civilization. In this show, students and professional models will wear handloom garments designed in modern styles.
More than 150 students from some of Delhi’s top colleges — including Lady Shri Ram (LSR), Miranda House, Hindu College, Pearl Academy, and others — will participate. They will not only model the clothes but also help curate the exhibits.
This will help young people engage with handloom in a creative way and see how traditional textiles can look beautiful in today’s world.
Support from Top Designers
Some of India’s leading fashion designers will also take part in Vastra Katha. Designers like:
Rahul Mishra
Sanjay Garg
Surekha Jain
Rina Dhaka
Pernia Qureshi
They will mentor the students and young artisans. This will give upcoming designers a chance to learn directly from industry experts and build connections that can help them grow in the field of sustainable fashion.
What Is a GI Tag and Why Does It Matter?
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a special label given to products that are made in a particular area and have qualities that are unique to that region. For example, Banarasi Sarees from Varanasi or Kullu Woolens from Himachal Pradesh.
GI tags help protect the identity and authenticity of traditional products. It also ensures that the real artisans get credit and financial benefits from their work.
By promoting GI-tagged handloom items, Vastra Katha will help boost the earnings of weavers and rural artisans, many of whom struggle to make ends meet.
Restructuring the Khadi Board
The event is also a part of a larger plan to reform and improve the Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board (DKVIB).
Minister Sirsa shared that the government wants to make the board sustainable by the end of 2025 and profitable by 2026. A budget of ₹50 crore has already been set aside for training and skill development in the handloom sector.
"We need platforms to showcase the work of our artisans, and Vastra Katha is one of them," said Mr. Sirsa.
A Joint Effort by the Centre and State
While talking about the event, Mr. Sirsa also praised both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for their support of the “Vocal for Local” campaign. This campaign encourages people to buy and use goods made in India, especially those made by small industries and artisans.
Through events like Vastra Katha, the government hopes to bring back the spotlight on handmade Indian products and make them a part of everyday life again.
The Vision: An Annual Flagship Event
The Delhi Government wants Vastra Katha to become a yearly event that people from across India and even abroad look forward to. The aim is to make it a flagship event for Delhi that celebrates handloom, supports artisans, and promotes sustainable fashion choices.
This event could also become a model for other states to follow and build similar platforms for their local crafts and handloom sectors.
In Conclusion: Why Vastra Katha Matters
Vastra Katha is not just a fashion show or exhibition. It is a movement to reconnect with India’s roots, support its artisans, and protect the planet.
At a time when fast fashion is damaging the environment, Vastra Katha reminds us that traditional handloom is:
Eco-friendly
Culturally rich
Supportive of rural jobs
Beautiful in design
A smart fashion choice
Through this event, Delhi is not only celebrating National Handloom Day but also leading the way toward climate-conscious fashion and artisan welfare.
If you’re in Delhi on August 6, don’t miss the chance to be part of Vastra Katha — where every thread tells a story.
