California experienced a powerful storm on Thursday, causing widespread damage statewide. The 'Pineapple Express' atmospheric river storm, reminiscent of last winter's havoc, prompted warnings of an even stronger storm approaching over the weekend. Residents were urged to stay local and prepare for potential flooding and mudslides.
Santa Barbara County, particularly vulnerable to flooding and mudslides due to its geographical location, initiated full preparation measures. The storm, initially impacting Northern California, flooded roads and triggered school closures. The coast faced threats of large waves.
Southern California woke up to dark skies, heavy rain, and strong winds on Thursday. Flash flood warnings were issued in parts of Los Angeles County, with Palos Verdes Estates residents advised to exercise caution, considering past incidents of homes sliding into canyons. Flooding in Long Beach and closure of major freeways added to the challenges.
The Orange County Fire Authority warned of dangerous water speeds, rescuing an individual from an overflowing storm drain. The Sierra Nevada received much-needed snowfall, beneficial for the drought-stricken state. The rain was expected to persist until Thursday night, with weather improvements forecasted for Friday and Saturday.
However, another, potentially more intense storm loomed for late Saturday into Sunday. While dispelling rumors of an "ARkStorm," scientists predicted a storm akin to last winter's record-breaking rainfall. UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain expressed growing concern about a potential major flood event between Santa Barbara and San Diego, emphasizing the need for close monitoring in the coming days.
