James Comey Indicted for Lying to Congress

Washington, Sept. 25, 2025 – Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on charges of lying to Congress, marking the first prosecution of a senior official linked to President Donald Trump’s long-debated Russia investigation. The criminal case comes days after Trump publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue Comey and other perceived political opponents.

The two-count indictment alleges Comey made false statements to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 30, 2020, regarding his authorization of an anonymous FBI source in media reports about an investigation. It also accuses him of attempting to obstruct the Senate inquiry. The case does not address the substance of the 2016 Russia investigation itself.

Trump hailed the indictment on Thursday, calling it “JUSTICE FOR AMERICA!” Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel also issued statements emphasizing that “no one is above the law.” Comey responded in a video, asserting his innocence and expressing confidence in the federal judicial system.

The indictment follows a series of unprecedented moves by the White House. Chief prosecutor Erik Siebert resigned last week amid pressure over charges against Comey and other Trump targets. Trump then nominated Lindsey Halligan, a former personal lawyer, as U.S. Attorney to present the case to a grand jury before the five-year statute of limitations expired.

Comey, who was fired by Trump in May 2017 after refusing to pledge personal loyalty, had previously shared memos detailing the president’s requests to interfere in FBI investigations. His firing was investigated for potential obstruction of justice, but no charges were filed against him at the time.

The indictment has prompted resignations within the Justice Department, including Comey’s son-in-law, Troy Edwards, who left the Eastern District of Virginia citing his oath to the Constitution. Comey’s daughter, Maurene Comey, was earlier terminated from her role as a federal prosecutor, which she claims was politically motivated.

This case intensifies scrutiny of the Justice Department under Bondi, raising questions about the influence of political pressure on prosecutorial decisions.
