What is Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)?
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, commonly known as coronary angioplasty, is a non-surgical procedure that helps open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries using a small balloon. This procedure is often used to relieve chest pain (angina) or reduce heart damage in case of a heart attack.

A Commitment to Excellence in Heart Care
In addition to the latest accreditation, the American College of Cardiology has also recognized Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi for its comprehensive approach to heart care. The hospital earned this designation for its dedication to continuous improvement, medical excellence, and patient-centered care.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute (HVTI) is known for its expertise in treating complex heart conditions. In 2024 alone, the institute performed 839 procedures, including:

574 cardiac surgeries
265 structural heart interventions
Since 2015, the institute has also completed 500 TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) procedures, making it a leader in minimally invasive heart treatments.

The Coronary Artery Disease Program at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi brings together top cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, and cardiac surgeons to provide personalized, high-quality treatment. The hospital is also globally recognized for its expertise in robotically assisted and hybrid heart surgeries.

Leadership Reactions
Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, shared his thoughts on the achievement:

"This accreditation is proof of our dedication to advancing healthcare. It reflects our commitment to combining innovation, world-class expertise, and a patient-first approach to redefine heart care in the region. This recognition highlights the exceptional work of our Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute and reinforces our mission to improve lives and transform cardiovascular care for patients in the UAE and beyond.”

Similarly, Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, Chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board, praised the hospital’s efforts:

"Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has shown a strong commitment to providing excellent heart care to patients in the UAE and around the world. The hospital continues to advance high-quality, sustainable healthcare. We are proud to grant them Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI.”

What This Accreditation Means for Patients
To earn Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI, hospitals must meet strict international standards. The accreditation process involves:

A full assessment of patient care procedures
Identifying and improving areas of care
A detailed onsite review by experts
Ongoing monitoring for high performance
Hospitals with this accreditation must also follow the best medical guidelines and safety practices. This includes proper sedation techniques, infection control, radiation safety, and smooth patient recovery processes.

Dr. Ronney Shantouf, Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Lab at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, emphasized the hospital’s dedication to heart care:

"This accreditation is a proud moment for our team. Advances in cardiac catheterisation have transformed how we treat complex heart conditions, allowing for safer, less invasive procedures with faster recovery times. Our team combines cutting-edge technology with medical expertise to provide life-saving care to our patients. This recognition is a testament to our commitment to improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for every patient."

Raising the Standard of Heart Care
