In a notable decision, an elderly woman in China has opted to leave her substantial $2.8 million fortune to her beloved cats and dogs, while intentionally excluding her children. Initially, she had crafted a will a few years ago, allocating money and property to her three children. However, she later revised her testament, citing the children's apparent neglect during her illness and minimal contact as reasons.
The woman, identified as Siu from Shanghai, articulated that her pets were her consistent companions during difficult times, and she insisted that her entire wealth should be utilized for their care and that of their offspring after her demise.
Adding another layer to the unusual bequest, a local veterinary clinic has been appointed as the administrator of her inheritance, entrusted with overseeing the welfare of the animals. Chen Kai, an official from China's Will Registration Centre headquarters in Beijing, explained that although the woman's original intention was to allocate all her money to her dogs, such a directive is not legally permissible in the country. Chen suggested alternatives, including appointing a trusted person to supervise the vet clinic to ensure proper care for the pets.
Liu received a warning about potential risks associated with entrusting the entire sum to the pet clinic before finalizing her will, as mentioned by a representative from the China Will Registration Centre's eastern China branch. The elderly woman was advised that if her children were to change their attitude towards her in the future, she could modify her will accordingly.
The woman's decision has sparked a debate on Chinese social media platforms. While some expressed support for her choice, others were surprised and felt sympathy for the apparent rift between the woman and her children.
A social media user commented, "Well done. If my daughter treats me poorly in the future, I will also leave my house to others." On the other hand, another person expressed empathy, saying, "How disappointed and heartbroken she must have been to make the decision not to leave anything to her children." The woman's story reflects the complex dynamics of familial relationships and the emotional weight attached to decisions regarding inheritance.
