China has surged ahead in the global race for generative artificial intelligence patents, filing over 38,000 patents from 2014 to 2023, according to a recent report by the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This figure dwarfs the numbers from other leading countries, with the U.S. trailing significantly at 6,276 patents, followed by South Korea (4,155), Japan (3,409), and India (1,350).

Generative AI, which enables the creation of content like text, images, music, and videos through artificial intelligence systems, has seen a rapid increase in patent filings worldwide. Currently, generative AI patents constitute 6% of all AI-related patents globally, underscoring its growing importance in technological advancements.

China's aggressive push in this field reflects its strategic focus on catching up with and potentially surpassing leading entities like OpenAI and major U.S. tech firms such as Microsoft, Google (Alphabet), and Amazon. This effort includes the development and deployment of large language models (LLMs), exemplified by innovations like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

In response to the rapid advancements by U.S. counterparts, Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Baidu have launched their own LLMs, aiming to compete in global markets and drive innovation locally. China's national strategy includes a comprehensive three-year action plan launched in May, targeting enhancements in AI chip standards, generative AI capabilities, and bolstering national computing capabilities to foster technological and economic growth.

The dominance of China in generative AI patents spans various applications, with image and video data leading with 17,996 patents, followed closely by text (13,494) and speech or music (13,480). This diversification underscores China's broad approach to integrating AI technologies across different sectors, leveraging specialized datasets to fuel innovation and real-world applications.

Looking forward, WIPO's report aims to inform global policymakers on the evolving landscape of generative AI, advocating for policies that promote innovation while ensuring societal benefits. This strategic approach seeks to harness the potential of AI technologies for collective progress and sustainable development across industries worldwide.
