ChatGPT Goes Down Worldwide, Users Left Frustrated and Waiting

On Tuesday, June 10, ChatGPT—one of the world’s most used AI chat tools—stopped working for many people around the world. The sudden service failure left thousands of users stuck and frustrated, especially those who use the chatbot daily for work or studies.

The problem started around 2:45 pm IST, as shown by Downdetector, a website that tracks online service outages. At one point, more than 500 people in India reported problems. Some couldn’t access the platform at all, others said it was slow, and many faced issues with getting proper responses.

In India, most complaints (about 82%) were related to ChatGPT’s main chat feature not working. Around 14% of users had trouble with the mobile app on both Android and iPhones, and 4% said services connected to the API were also not functioning. The situation in the US was worse—with 93% of people reporting problems with the chatbot itself.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, posted an update on its website saying, “Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate this issue.”

As of now, the outage is still ongoing and many users still cannot access the platform.

This breakdown came at a time when a growing number of people—including developers, content creators, students, and businesses—depend on ChatGPT to help with tasks like coding, solving problems, and writing content.

Social media sites like X (formerly Twitter) were full of frustrated posts. Some users started looking for backup tools, while others shared funny memes about the outage.

This isn’t the first time ChatGPT has gone down. A few months ago, when OpenAI added a new image feature that allowed people to make Studio Ghibli-style pictures, the high traffic caused another crash.
