Central Vietnam is facing severe flooding, heavy rain, and landslides that have killed at least 16 people since the weekend. The government reported the rising death toll on Thursday, warning that water levels continue to climb in already submerged towns and villages.
Over the past three days, some areas in central Vietnam have received more than 1,500 millimetres of rainfall, overwhelming rivers and drainage systems. The heavy rains have triggered landslides in mountainous regions and swept through low-lying towns, destroying homes and cutting off roads.
The affected region is crucial for the country’s coffee production and tourism. Popular coastal towns and beach resorts have been inundated, forcing residents and tourists to evacuate to safer locations. Authorities are mobilising emergency services to assist those stranded and to provide food, water, and medical aid.
Local officials have urged people to stay indoors and avoid travelling through flood-affected areas. They also warned of the risk of further landslides as rain continues in the coming days.
Vietnam often experiences heavy rainfall and flooding during the monsoon season, with central provinces particularly vulnerable due to their mountainous terrain and river systems. Emergency teams continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to protect residents and reduce further loss of life.
Water levels are expected to remain high in many towns, and authorities are preparing temporary shelters and relief supplies for affected communities. The government has also called on citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.
