In a landmark ruling, a US bankruptcy court has directed Byju Raveendran, founder of Edtech giant Byju’s, to pay more than $1 billion following repeated failures to comply with court orders in a high-stakes financial dispute. The judgment comes amid allegations that Raveendran and Byju’s Alpha mismanaged $533 million from a $1.2 billion loan, prompting intensified scrutiny from lenders and regulators.
The Delaware Bankruptcy Court described the ruling as extraordinary, emphasizing the unique circumstances of the case. Under the order, Raveendran must provide a full and accurate account of how the Alpha Funds were used. The court also imposed penalties related to prior transfers, including $533 million from 2022 and an additional $540.6 million tied to a 2023 transaction involving the Camshaft hedge fund interest.
The case emerged following claims that a significant portion of the funds was round-tripped through OCI Limited, allegedly diverting money to a Singapore entity owned by Raveendran for personal use. Oliver Chapman, founder of OCI, stated under oath that the transactions suggested improper intentions. Raveendran has denied all allegations, while the court noted his repeated non-compliance with legal directives.
Previously, Raveendran faced civil contempt charges for failing to submit critical documents, accumulating daily fines of $10,000. The court observed that despite mounting penalties, no payments had been made, underscoring ongoing challenges in enforcing the ruling.
The case has attracted significant attention across financial and legal communities, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in cross-border financial operations. With the court now demanding detailed disclosure, stakeholders are closely watching how the funds were handled and whether the founder will comply with the sweeping orders.
