Bengal Governor Reacts Strongly After Hospital Visit CBI Meets Doctor's Parents in Rape-Murder Case

In the ongoing Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, significant developments have unfolded as protests and investigations continue. On August 15, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to assess the situation following recent vandalism by unidentified individuals. His visit came in response to the distressing events surrounding the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9.

During his visit, Governor Bose spoke with the junior doctors who have been actively protesting the horrific crime. He expressed solidarity with their demands for justice and assured them of his support. “I am with you, and we will work together to solve this. I assure you justice. My ears and eyes are open,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

In the afternoon, nursing staff at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who have been on strike over the case, surrounded the principal’s office. They demanded increased security and answers regarding the safety measures being implemented at the hospital.

The unrest escalated late Wednesday night when a mob entered the hospital grounds, causing widespread damage. The group vandalized property, attacked vehicles, and targeted public property, prompting security personnel to intervene. The vandalism led to further chaos, with police officers firing tear gas to disperse the crowd. Despite the violence, Kolkata Police assured that the crime scene related to the doctor's murder was not compromised during the incident.

Governor Bose condemned the violence, describing it as "shocking, shattering, and deplorable." He criticized the state of law enforcement, alleging that some police sections have become "politicized and criminalized." Bose emphasized the need for improved security and accountability, stating, “The custodians of law have themselves become conspirators. This rot has to end...The government is responsible for this.”

Earlier in the day, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the case, visited the victim’s family in North 24 Parganas. They recorded statements from the victim's parents as part of their investigation.

In response to the vandalism, final year MBBS student Anupam Roy called for public support to create a secure environment for healthcare workers. He criticized the mob for their deliberate destruction and urged for solidarity to ensure safety in medical institutions.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and debate about the safety of medical professionals and the effectiveness of law enforcement in handling such critical situations.
