Dhaka: Anis Alamgir, a journalist from Bangladesh, has been taken into custody by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, invoking the nation’s Anti-Terrorism law. This move has elicited strong reactions from advocates of press freedom and political analysts alike. Alamgir's arrest follows claims that Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus's government is tightening its grip on independent media within the country. He was detained after a gym visit in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi-2 and subsequently placed on a five-day remand as ordered by an Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.

Former Information Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat publicly criticized this development, viewing it as part of a broader conspiracy to stifle independent and progressive expressions. “Four individuals, including journalist Anis Alamgir and actress Meher Afroz Shaon, are facing charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act. This is clearly an intimidation tactic against independent voices,” Arafat stated. He points to Yunus's prior abuses of this law against a range of figures, including journalists and academics, as indicative of a systematic effort to placate militant Islamist factions.

The case initiated at Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka also implicates actress Meher Afroz Shaon, model Maria Kishpatt, and media figure Imtu Ratish Imtiaz. Arian Ahmed, a key member of the July Revolutionary Alliance, lodged the complaint against them for allegedly fostering the rehabilitation of the banned Awami League. Anis Alamgir, who has a history of critical writing regarding Yunus’s rule while previously contributing to Bangladesh Daily Ajker Kagoj, faces severe repercussions for his stance. Shaon, a former Awami League candidate, has previously been accused and prosecuted, experiencing repeated harassment against her family.

The Editors’ Council of Bangladesh has condemned the arrest of Alamgir, likening it to historical governmental oppression directed at journalists. They argue that if allegations exist, they should be resolved via established legal protocols rather than punitive government interventions. Detractors insist this arrest marks a considerable retreat for press freedoms and independent journalism in Bangladesh, further underlining an ongoing struggle between government authority and media freedom.

Experts caution that the persistent suppression of secular and progressive voices in Bangladesh could jeopardize democratic foundations and steer the country further towards authoritarian governance. The detention of Anis Alamgir has once again ignited discussions surrounding press rights, state encroachment, and the use of anti-terror laws to suppress dissent.
