Australia’s cricket captain Mitchell Marsh has said that the team will continue to play with an aggressive approach in T20 matches. This decision comes as part of Australia’s preparation for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Marsh admitted that this attacking plan will not always bring success, but it remains the best path toward winning the title. The Australian team begins a five-match T20 series against India on Wednesday as part of their build-up to the global event.

Reflecting on recent World Cup disappointments, Marsh said that Australia failed to go “all the way” in the last two editions, finishing in the Super 12 and Super 8 stages in 2022 and 2024 respectively. He explained that these results motivated the team to adopt a more fearless style of cricket. “We have spoken about challenging ourselves as a team,” Marsh said. “We might fail sometimes, but this approach gives us the best chance for success.”

Marsh said that playing aggressively is now a global trend in T20 cricket. Most international teams have shifted to fast-paced, boundary-hitting tactics in recent years. “If you look at the World Cup in India, that’s how we want to play,” he said. Marsh believes that staying committed to this attacking approach is vital for achieving consistent success, even if it comes with the risk of occasional failures.

The Australian captain praised India as a strong and well-balanced team. He said the upcoming five-match series will be thrilling for fans and a good learning opportunity for players. “India is a fantastic team. We respect them a lot, and this series will be exciting for everyone,” Marsh stated. The Australian team hopes to use this series to refine its game plan and test its aggressive approach in challenging subcontinent conditions.

Marsh said he is happy with how the Australian team is improving as a group. “We have about eight games before the World Cup, and we are building nicely as a team,” he said. While he did not comment much on India’s preparations, he emphasized that Australia’s focus remains on refining their own system. “We feel great at the moment but know this will be a tough series,” he added.

Many Australian players, including Marsh, regularly play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Marsh said that this familiarity with Indian players does not necessarily make things easier. “There’s so much video footage available these days. Everyone knows everyone. The real challenge is execution under pressure,” he explained.

Marsh praised India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma, who played a major role in India’s recent Asia Cup victory. “He sets the tone for India at the top. He’s been incredible for the Sunrisers and provides a great challenge for us,” Marsh said. He added that facing talented players like Abhishek helps the Australians test their skills against the best.

The Australian skipper himself has been in excellent form recently, scoring two centuries and two half-centuries in his last 10 innings. Marsh said his main aim is to contribute to the team’s victories rather than focusing on personal achievements. “I just want to build good partnerships and help win games for Australia,” he said. “As captain, I don’t think differently. I focus on my role as a batsman.”

Australia’s T20 squad will see several changes during the India series due to player rotations and personal reasons. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa will miss the start of the series following the birth of his second child. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will play the first two matches before leaving, while Sean Abbott will depart after the third game. “We do have players coming in and out, but that’s part of modern cricket schedules,” Marsh said.

Marsh emphasized that flexibility and clarity are crucial for success in today’s busy cricketing calendar. “Some players are returning from injury, and others are playing domestic cricket. Every player knows their role and must perform when called upon,” he explained. Marsh concluded by saying that the team’s adaptability and clear understanding of roles will be essential for maintaining balance and focus during this important phase of preparation.
