Ancient Egyptian DNA reveals ties with Mesopotamia

Scientists have found something amazing about an ancient Egyptian man who lived when the first pyramids were being built. His DNA shows that about 20% of his family history comes from Mesopotamia, which is now parts of Iraq and Syria. This means there were strong connections between Egypt and Mesopotamia thousands of years ago.

His DNA was well protected because of how he was buried. Researchers took the DNA from the roots of two teeth kept in a ceramic pot inside his tomb. This is a big achievement because Egypt’s hot weather usually destroys old DNA. It is the first time a complete genome of an ancient Egyptian has been studied.

The man lived around 4,500 to 4,800 years ago during Egypt’s Old Kingdom. This was the time when great pyramids like Djoser’s Step Pyramid and Khufu’s Great Pyramid were built.

His remains were found in 1902 near Beni Hassan, 170 miles south of Cairo. Scientists say this proves that people from Egypt and Mesopotamia were connected. There is already proof of trade and shared art between these two civilisations, like imported stones and similar pottery designs.

The pottery wheel, which was invented in Mesopotamia, first appeared in Egypt when this man was alive. His bones show he had osteoporosis and arthritis, and he had a large unhealed abscess. Experts think he was a potter because his bones show marks of strong muscle use, just like in images of potters from that time.

Even though he worked very hard, his burial shows he was respected and probably a well-known potter. The research team says this discovery opens new ways to learn about ancient people, even though it is very hard to find well-preserved DNA in Egypt.

Pontus Skoglund, one of the researchers, said finding this DNA was a lucky and rare success. These results help us understand how ancient civilisations were linked and how people moved, worked, and lived together thousands of years ago.
