Ajou Ajou Released by Roughriders Following CFL Investigation

In a decisive move, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have let go of wide receiver Ajou Ajou following a thorough investigation by the Canadian Football League into allegations of misconduct. The league found that Ajou had made “aggressive and unwelcome physical contact” with several women at a Regina restaurant on November 18, 2025—coinciding with the team’s Grey Cup victory celebrations.

The allegations surfaced in late January, prompting the league to initiate a third-party investigation. This involved interviews with Ajou, witnesses, and those who filed complaints. Based on the findings, the CFL concluded that Ajou breached its gender-based violence and harassment policies.

In response, the CFL has suspended Ajou for the 2026 preseason along with a minimum of six regular-season games. Clear conditions for any future reinstatement have been set, mandating at least 15 counseling sessions with a specialist in gender-based violence, a psychological evaluation, and a formal meeting with Commissioner Stewart Johnston. Not adhering to these stipulations could result in further penalties.

The Roughriders expressed their disapproval, asserting that Ajou’s actions did not align with the team’s values. General Manager Jeremy O’Day stated that the organization maintains strict standards regarding respect and personal conduct. He confirmed that as soon as the allegations were known to the team, they reported them without delay to league officials.

O’Day acknowledged the context of the incident, noting that it occurred during the team’s Grey Cup celebrations. Nonetheless, he emphasized that this does not mitigate the inappropriateness of Ajou's actions, deeming the situation disappointing while reaffirming the organization’s commitment to a safe and respectful environment.

O’Day firmly stated that regardless of the CFL’s potential for reinstatement, Ajou Ajou will not be returning to the Roughriders. He characterized his discussions with Ajou as difficult but necessary given the gravity of the findings.

The CFL reiterated its support for affected individuals, offering access to consultants, counseling services, and safety planning resources. Meanwhile, authorities in Regina have confirmed that no formal complaints have been logged regarding this situation.
