A pivotal advancement in digital innovation and research has been realized in Turkmenistan with the establishment of the UNESCO Chair for Digital Science at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences. This initiative signifies the country’s commitment to modernizing its scientific and educational landscapes through global alliances.

The inaugural event on April 15 brought together prominent scholars, educators, policymakers, and emerging researchers. It also showcased an exhibition highlighting innovative projects and digital transformation efforts across various sectors, underlining Turkmenistan's dedication to nurturing innovation.

During the launch, Chynar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, stressed the crucial role of international collaboration in advancing digital technologies. She pointed out that furthering connections with UNESCO remains a pivotal strategy, particularly in domains like artificial intelligence, data science, and open knowledge frameworks.

Allaberdi Ashirov, President of the Academy of Sciences, remarked on the historical importance of the new chair, viewing it as a representation of the nation’s long-term vision to integrate innovation within national progress. He emphasized that this initiative will bridge the divide between scientific inquiry and its practical implementation across various sectors.

Furthermore, Durdymyrat Gadamov, Director of the International Science and Technology Park, outlined that the new department aims to delve into advanced areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and geospatial technologies. These advancements are anticipated to be vital in enhancing resource management, boosting agricultural productivity, and fostering sustainable economic development.

The department will be spearheaded by Nikolai Nikolayev, an expert in geoinformation systems and land management automation. His leadership is expected to amplify the department’s research capabilities while fostering international partnerships, particularly with networks linked to global organizations.

Under the UNESCO UNITWIN program, which connects over 1,100 institutions worldwide, the chair will present valuable opportunities for young researchers to engage in international projects, access advanced knowledge, and partake in global dialogues surrounding artificial intelligence ethics and open science.

This initiative is poised to elevate Turkmenistan’s profile in academia and science on a global scale, empowering a new generation of researchers. By intertwining technological advancement with global cooperation, the UNESCO Digital Science Chair is primed to emerge as a vital hub for driving future scientific growth in the nation.
