Canada Post has declared that 136,000 homes across 13 communities will lose door-to-door delivery starting this year, as part of a broader initiative to switch millions of households to community mailboxes. This plan will extend into early 2027.

This strategy is part of a five-year vision aimed at phasing out traditional home delivery for the remaining four million households that still receive mail directly at their doors. The change arises from growing financial pressures faced by Canada Post, which seeks to cut costs while continuing operations.

The initial changes will primarily affect regions in British Columbia and Ontario, notably including Ottawa, Etobicoke, and areas surrounding Vancouver. Additional impacted regions comprise parts of the Fraser Valley, Greater Moncton, Winnipeg, Montreal's South Shore, and Quebec's northeast coast—chosen mainly for their proximity to existing community mailbox systems, facilitating smoother transitions.

Canada Post notes that transitioning from door-to-door delivery to centralized mailboxes is a process that can take several months, involving consultations with local communities to identify appropriate locations. Remarkably, nearly 75% of Canadian addresses already utilize some form of centralized delivery, including community mailboxes.

Cost efficiency is a primary driver of the shift. Canada Post revealed that serving a household through door-to-door delivery incurs costs nearly double that of servicing a community mailbox. By shifting remaining addresses, the corporation anticipates annual savings of approximately $400 million once the transition is fully executed.

The organization has encountered substantial financial losses over recent years. Since 2018, it has reported losses exceeding $3.8 billion before taxes, including nearly $1 billion during the first three quarters of 2025 alone. Despite its legal obligation to function as a self-sustaining entity, Canada Post has depended on about $2 billion in federal loans over the last two years to continue its operations.

The initiative aims to establish a more uniform and sustainable delivery network across Canada. Community mailboxes are designed to offer secure, weather-protected spaces where residents can retrieve mail and parcels at their leisure. Canada Post also confirmed that special accommodation programs will be maintained for individuals unable to access these mailboxes.

The announcement has prompted backlash from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, who labeled the actions as extreme, voicing concerns regarding their effects on the public and postal employees. This decision arrives at a politically charged moment, as union members are preparing to vote on a new collective bargaining agreement after recent national labor disputes.

Ultimately, this transition signifies a major shift in Canada’s postal landscape, responding to evolving mail-use trends and ongoing financial pressures.
