Recent research has highlighted a concerning shift in Africa's forests. Historically, these forests played a vital role in combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, the trend has reversed, with forests now releasing more carbon than they sequester. This alarming development intensifies the global warming crisis, and scientists urge world leaders to take action.
Published in Scientific Reports, the study indicates that this change began around 2010, primarily due to accelerated deforestation and forest harm. The rate of tree loss is outpacing their natural regrowth. Additionally, degradation—where forests are negatively impacted without being completely destroyed—worsens the situation. As tree cover diminishes, trapped carbon is released into the air.
Researchers from the UK's National Centre for Earth Observation utilized state-of-the-art satellite technology and machine learning. By leveraging data from NASA and Japan's ALOS radar satellites, along with thousands of ground measurements, they created the most comprehensive map of Africa's forest biomass to date. Findings revealed that between 2010 and 2017, Africa experienced a loss of approximately 106 billion kilograms of forest biomass annually, equivalent to 106 million cars.
The most significant losses occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and parts of West Africa. These regions, characterized by lush tropical forests, are crucial for carbon storage. While some savanna areas saw nominal gains from shrub growth, it was insufficient to offset the extensive losses in key forest regions.
This discovery serves as a critical alert to the international community. According to Professor Heiko Balzter, one of the study’s contributors, if African forests cease to absorb carbon, other global regions must make more substantial reductions in emissions to meet Paris Agreement targets. Dr. Pedro Rodríguez-Veiga, another researcher, emphasized the necessity for collaboration among governments, private sectors, and NGOs to protect forests, combat illegal logging, and revitalize damaged habitats.
