A devastating fire tore through an apartment complex in central Hanoi early Friday, claiming the lives of 14 individuals and leaving three others injured, according to local authorities. The incident unfolded in Cau Giay district, a densely populated area of Vietnam's capital known for housing numerous universities. Flames erupted around 12:30 am local time, engulfing the building and sending smoke and toxic gases billowing into the night sky.

Rescue efforts were swiftly initiated as emergency responders forced their way into the building, braving the perilous conditions to evacuate seven trapped individuals. Witnesses described harrowing scenes of explosions resembling firecrackers and cries for help echoing throughout the neighborhood. Hanoi police reported extensive damage, with the fire consuming vehicles parked in the courtyard and ultimately claiming 14 lives.

Amidst the chaos, survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while the building itself succumbed to the ferocious blaze, leaving behind a charred shell. The structure, comprising two interconnected blocks, was a residential complex with 12 rooms available for rent. Reports indicated that the courtyard was commonly used for the sale and repair of electric bicycles.

Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of horror as flames engulfed the building, with thick smoke obstructing visibility and explosions reverberating through the neighborhood. Despite frantic attempts to douse the flames with water, the fire raged uncontrollably, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which marks the latest tragic incident in a series of deadly blazes to hit Vietnam. Last September, the country witnessed its deadliest fire in two decades when 56 individuals, including three children, perished in a similar apartment block blaze in Hanoi. This latest incident underscores the pressing need for improved fire safety measures and heightened vigilance across the nation.

In response to such tragedies, the Vietnamese government has implemented measures to enhance fire safety protocols, including inspections of high-risk venues and the installation of fire safety equipment in public spaces. As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the nation mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of yet another devastating blaze.
