Zelenskyy landed in South Africa at night. At the same time, former U.S. President Donald Trump said that Zelenskyy is making the war longer. Trump said this is because Zelenskyy refuses to give away the land called Crimea to Russia. Russia took Crimea from Ukraine some years ago.
While Zelenskyy was flying, Russia attacked Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with missiles and drones. This attack killed nine people and hurt 63 more, including six children.
The peace talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe are not going well. They had a meeting in London, but it was cut short because U.S. Secretary Marco Rubio didn’t come. This made many people worry if the talks will help or not.
Later on Thursday, Zelenskyy will meet South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the government buildings in Pretoria. They will talk about how both countries can work together to help bring long-lasting peace.
President Ramaphosa wants to help as a middleman because South Africa is friendly with Russia. Both countries are part of the group called BRICS. But so far, there hasn’t been much progress.
Ramaphosa said he also spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone a few days ago. They both said they want to work on peace plans.
But Zelenskyy doesn’t believe Putin is serious about peace. Zelenskyy said Putin’s call for a ceasefire during Easter was fake, because Russia keeps attacking Ukraine.
