San Francisco / New York — Thousands of users across the United States experienced interruptions accessing X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, on Saturday. Downdetector, which crowdsources outage reports, recorded disruptions peaking at more than 10,000 incidents before steadily dropping to approximately 1,041 reports by 7:42 pm Eastern Time. The platform began showing signs of recovery by late evening.

No official statement emerged from X during or after the outage. Musk, however, has previously cited broad operational shortcomings as typical triggers for similar incidents, including a significant outage in March that he attributed to a suspected cyberattack.

Responding to ongoing downtime, Musk publicly committed to reinforcing reliability. He shared that he has been working around the clock across his ventures, emphasizing long nights spent at company facilities, including server rooms, so that teams at X, xAI, Tesla, and Starship could troubleshoot critical issues. He noted that recent service disruptions highlight the need for “major operational improvements.” 

Unlike the March event, this outage appears focused within the U.S., with an abrupt peak and smooth tapering, hinting at a technical fault rather than a broader systemic failure. Downdetector’s numbers reflect user reports and may slightly overstate or understate the total affected user base, but the pattern is clear: most service restored by late evening Saturday.

X has been battling stability challenges since Musk acquired the platform, especially after its rebrand from Twitter.
