The World Utilities Congress 2024 concluded in Abu Dhabi after three impactful days focused on the future of the power and water sectors. This year's event brought together over 12,000 professionals, more than 1,400 delegates, 280 speakers, and 180 exhibitors to engage in high-level discussions about critical energy transition topics, such as decoupling emissions from economic growth, enhancing grid resilience, and boosting renewable energy capacity.
A significant highlight was the Ministerial Panel titled “Tripling Renewable Energy Capacity: From Action to Ambition,” featuring prominent leaders like His Excellency Eng. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, and Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The panel underscored the necessity for international collaboration, ambitious policy frameworks, and increased investment to make renewable energy both affordable and scalable.

Another key session, the Global Leadership Panel titled “Megabytes to Megawatts: Driving Innovation and Efficiency in Power Generation,” explored long-term strategies for energy system innovation. This session included insights from industry leaders such as Noel Aoun, Chief Strategy Officer at TAQA, and Tomaz Guadagnin, Managing Director at ENGIE. Santiago Bañales López emphasized the importance of strategic dialogue in shaping the future of the global energy system, noting the congress's role in fostering cooperation among various stakeholders.
Day three featured the Global Leadership Panel on “Unlocking the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Economy,” which gathered experts including Nawal Alhanaee from the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The panel highlighted hydrogen's potential as a transformative solution in the energy transition, advocating for its adoption to achieve net-zero targets and reshape global energy frameworks.
Another engaging session focused on a customer-centric approach within the utilities sector. Panelists, including Omar Al Hashmi from TAQA and Alessandra Pasini from Zhero, discussed the evolving needs of consumers and the opportunity for utility providers to enhance energy efficiency through tailored solutions.
The congress also addressed the intermittency challenges of renewable energy sources in a panel titled “Combatting Intermittency Challenges with Storage and Flexibility Solutions.” Experts like Joe Mastrangelo, CEO of Eos Energy Storage, explored advanced storage technologies and flexibility strategies necessary for maintaining a stable power supply.
The Technical Conference featured innovations in energy efficiency, carbon capture, and grid modernization, while the Clean Tech Innovation Theatre showcased technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the Power Gen Innovation Theatre highlighted advancements in power generation focused on improving efficiency and reliability.
Overall, the World Utilities Congress 2024 served as a vital platform for industry leaders to share insights, collaborate on innovative solutions, and drive progress towards a sustainable utilities future. The congress not only facilitated discussions but also enabled the establishment of strategic partnerships and the unveiling of industry-shaping innovations to a global audience.
