Tehran, Iran – Two men were detained after a video circulated on social media showing them holding up Iran’s pre-1979 national flag inside a metro station in Tehran.
The footage appears to show the pair wearing army uniforms while standing on a crowded subway platform, displaying the green-white-red tricolour with the Lion and Sun emblem, which was Iran’s official state flag before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Iranian authorities said metro security intervened quickly and arrested the men for allegedly disrupting public order. State outlets later claimed the uniforms were imitation and that the men were not active members of the armed forces.
The pre-revolution flag, banned under the Islamic Republic, has been associated with opposition movements and has appeared during anti-government protests in recent years. The identities of the two men and the exact charges have not been officially released.
