In a historic first, the U.S. Department of War and Department of Energy successfully airlifted a next-generation compact nuclear reactor aboard a C‑17 Globemaster III aircraft from California to Hill Air Force Base, Utah. The operation marks a significant milestone in the nation’s nuclear energy and defence initiatives.
The reactor, developed under the administration’s initiative to modernize the U.S. nuclear energy sector, is set for testing at the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab. The project aims to evaluate advanced power solutions capable of providing electricity to military bases and remote sites without relying on civilian power grids.
Officials described the airlift as a key step in an “American nuclear renaissance,” designed to enhance energy resilience, national security, and technological leadership. At the same time, critics have voiced concerns over potential long-term costs, energy impact, and safety considerations.
