Venezuelan Gang Exploits New York Migrant Crisis for Criminal Gains

The Venezuelan criminal gang, Tren de Aragua, notorious for its involvement in sex trafficking, human smuggling, and drug dealing, has established a significant presence in New York City, as reported by local media. This surge in gang activity coincides with an influx of migrants over the past two years, raising concerns among residents and law enforcement officials alike.

Emerging in recent years, Tren de Aragua has quickly become a source of fear for local communities, with armed members frequently seen riding mopeds throughout the city. Their operations have included illegal gun sales and organized prostitution rings, which reportedly thrive in neighborhoods heavily impacted by the recent migrant wave. These activities occur in plain sight, often right under the noses of security personnel stationed at private shelters.

Adding to the dangers, the gang has been linked to the sale of Tussi, a potent and deadly mix of fentanyl often referred to as "pink cocaine." The gang's rapid expansion has not only alarmed ordinary New Yorkers but has also put significant pressure on the city's police force, which is struggling to maintain public safety amid rising crime rates associated with gang activity.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny addressed the situation, clarifying that while not all migrants are criminals or gang members, members of Tren de Aragua often blend into the migrant community to carry out their illegal activities. “These TDA guys hide very well in plain sight in the migrant community,” he stated. The chief emphasized that law enforcement is not targeting innocent individuals, such as food delivery workers, but is focused on apprehending those involved in criminal enterprises. He noted that arrested gang members are often willing to provide information about their crimes.

Tren de Aragua, which translates to “train from Aragua” (a state in north-central Venezuela), is now coordinating theft and robbery crews that create chaos in various neighborhoods. Despite this alarming trend, police officials stress that the gang has not taken full control of the city. Aurora Police Department Chief Todd Chamberlain commented on the broader narrative, saying, “Gangs are not in control of the city of Aurora,” while acknowledging the presence of gangs in many major cities across the United States.

Chief Chamberlain characterized the situation as a crime issue rather than an immigration problem, urging that responsibility lies with the federal government to address these concerns effectively. "This is not an immigration issue. It's a crime issue," he reiterated, calling attention to the need for coordinated efforts to tackle gang-related crime within urban settings.
