Historic US Winter Storm Cuts Power, Cancels 10,000 Flights

Washington, US: A massive winter storm is sweeping across the eastern two-thirds of the United States, leaving nearly 1 million people without power and forcing the cancellation of over 10,000 flights. The storm brings heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerously low temperatures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that sub-freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions could last for several days, causing "dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts." States most affected include Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama.

PowerOutage.us reported more than 850,000 customers without electricity, including 290,000 in Tennessee and over 100,000 each in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana.

Meteorologist Allison Santorelli described the storm as "unique" due to its vast reach, affecting nearly 213 million people across a 2,000-mile stretch from New Mexico and Texas up to New England.

Calling the storm "historic," US President Donald Trump approved federal emergency disaster declarations. Nearly 20 states and the District of Columbia have declared weather emergencies. Trump urged residents to "stay safe, and stay warm."

The winter storm has caused massive travel disruptions, with major airlines warning passengers of cancellations and delays. FEMA has pre-positioned supplies and search-and-rescue teams in several states. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem advised residents to stock up on fuel and food and take precautions.

The NWS cautioned that heavy ice could cause long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous travel, even in areas not used to harsh winter conditions.
