The United States made a significant decision last week, suspending a shipment of bombs to Israel due to unresolved concerns regarding Israel's intended incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah. A high-ranking official within President Joe Biden's administration, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the shipment, comprising 1,800 2,000-lb (907 kg) bombs and 1,700 500-lb (226 kg) bombs, had been put on hold pending further evaluation.
The decision came amidst escalating tensions as Israel appeared poised to undertake a major ground operation in Rafah, a move vehemently opposed by Washington. Despite ongoing discussions between Israeli and US officials to explore alternative strategies, the concerns raised by the US remained unresolved, prompting the administration to take a cautious stance.

The deliberations primarily centered around the potential use of the heaviest 2,000-lb bombs, particularly their implications in densely populated urban areas, drawing parallels with past instances in Gaza. The US State Department continues to scrutinize other proposed weapons transfers, including precision bomb kits such as JDAMs.
On Tuesday, Israel dispatched tanks into Rafah and seized control of the border crossing with Egypt, an action that contradicted earlier assurances from Israel that it would be a "limited operation," as stated by the White House. The situation underscores the complex dynamics at play in the region and the delicate balance of interests that the US seeks to navigate.
