US Father Arrested for Buying Gun as Christmas Gift for School Shooting Suspect

Post by : Elena Malik

In a tragic incident at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, a shooting on Wednesday claimed the lives of two teachers and two 14-year-old students. The victims have been identified as teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53, alongside students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Additionally, two teachers and seven students sustained injuries during the attack.

Colt Gray, the 14-year-old suspected shooter, has been charged with four counts of felony murder and will be tried as an adult. Authorities revealed that Colt’s father, Colin Gray, 54, was arrested and charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, stated at a press conference that these charges were brought against Colin Gray for "knowingly allowing his son to possess the murder weapon."

The weapon used in the shooting was an "AR platform style weapon," or semiautomatic rifle. Reports indicate that Colin Gray purchased the rifle as a Christmas gift for his son in December 2023, buying it from a local gun store. Additionally, it was revealed that Colt Gray had previously been interviewed by law enforcement last year due to online threats concerning a potential school shooting.

The broader issue of gun violence in schools has intensified debates about gun laws in the United States. In response to the tragedy, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris labeled the Georgia shooting a “senseless tragedy” and called for an end to the “epidemic of gun violence.” Harris emphasized the need for significant action to address the issue.

The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident and that his administration will continue to coordinate with federal, state, and local officials as more information becomes available. President Biden expressed his condolences, stating, “Jill and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence and thinking of all of the survivors whose lives are forever changed.” He also urged Republicans to collaborate with Democrats to pass “common-sense gun safety legislation.”

Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, condemned the event as a "tragic" occurrence. In a social media statement, Trump described the victims as “cherished children” and denounced the shooting as the act of a “sick and deranged monster.”

The Apalachee High School shooting highlights the ongoing crisis of gun violence in the U.S. and underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reform in gun safety and regulation.
