Ukraine-US Talks on Tomahawk Missiles Remain ‘Positive’ Despite Trump

Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, has described ongoing discussions with Washington regarding the purchase of long-range Tomahawk missiles and other advanced weaponry as “positive.” However, US President Donald Trump has stated that he is not currently considering approving any such deal.

Stefanishyna expressed optimism over the progress made in the dialogue between Kyiv and Washington, noting that the talks focused on enhancing Ukraine’s long-range defense capabilities. “We are engaged in constructive discussions with our American counterparts about Tomahawk missiles and other systems that would strengthen our national security,” she said.

President Trump, speaking on Sunday, maintained a cautious stance on the issue, saying he is “not considering a deal for now” that would allow Ukraine access to long-range Tomahawk missiles. His remarks come amid ongoing debates in Washington over the extent of US military support for Kyiv in its defense against Russian aggression.

Tomahawk missiles, known for their precision and ability to strike targets from more than 1,000 kilometers away, could significantly boost Ukraine’s capability to deter Russian military operations. However, US officials remain wary of escalating tensions with Moscow if such weaponry were provided.

Despite Trump’s current position, analysts suggest that the talks reflect a growing strategic dialogue between Ukraine and the United States. Kyiv continues to push for advanced arms as it seeks to maintain defensive strength and deter further Russian incursions.

The issue of long-range weapons remains a key point in US-Ukraine relations, as both sides balance military necessity with geopolitical caution. While Washington has supplied Ukraine with substantial military aid and intelligence support, the introduction of Tomahawk missiles would represent a major policy shift.
