UK Nurse Jailed 14 Years for Baby's Death by Bean Bag Strapping

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, where nursery nurse Kate Roughley's actions led to the death of nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan. Roughley, sentenced to 14 years in prison, had tightly strapped Genevieve face down onto a bean bag for over 90 minutes as punishment for not sleeping adequately. The court, as reported by the Independent, heard how Roughley further restrained the baby with a harness and blanket, leading to suffocation on May 9, 2022.

Following a four-week trial at Manchester Crown Court, jurors unanimously found Roughley guilty of manslaughter by ill-treatment. Jurors, visibly moved, shed tears as they watched the nursery CCTV footage capturing the tragic unfolding of events. Prosecutor Peter Wright KC highlighted Genevieve's desperate struggle for survival, which went unheeded amidst her crying and thrashing.

Mrs. Justice Ellenbogen, in sentencing Roughley, condemned the avoidable nature of Genevieve's death and criticized Roughley's lack of genuine remorse. She rebuked Roughley for neglecting Genevieve's distress, evident in the CCTV footage, and leaving her in a perilous position despite her evident discomfort.

Inspector Charlotte Whalley, the lead investigator, described the investigation as harrowing and distressing, underscoring the profound impact of Roughley's reprehensible actions. Genevieve's untimely demise has left a lasting scar on all affected by Roughley's negligence.

In her defense, Roughley portrayed Genevieve's death as an unfortunate accident, disavowing any deliberate wrongdoing. However, the court's verdict underscores the gravity of Roughley's actions and the profound loss suffered by Genevieve and her loved ones.
