The funeral started in the famous Saint Peter’s Square, where many leaders and important guests from all over the world came to say goodbye. After the ceremony, the burial happened at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.
During the event, Sheikh Khaled gave the UAE President’s condolences to Cardinal Kevin Farrell and Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. He also sent warm sympathy to the College of Cardinals, the Vatican, and the worldwide Catholic people after the passing of Pope Francis.
Sheikh Khaled spoke about Pope Francis, saying he was a great example of friendship between people, peaceful living together, and talks between different religions. He said the Pope’s good work will keep inspiring people in the future to spread kindness and understanding.
Pope Francis spent his life building peace between different cultures and religions. His special visit to the UAE in February 2019 was a big moment. During that visit, Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Professor Ahmed Al-Tayeb, signed the Human Fraternity Document in Abu Dhabi. This paper became a symbol of peace and friendship among all people.
Later, the United Nations agreed to celebrate February 4th every year as the International Day of Human Fraternity, to honor the message of peace brought by Pope Francis and others.
