Trump Advocates for US Ownership of Greenland to Curb Adversaries

In a recent statement, US President Donald Trump asserted that the United States should own Greenland to prevent Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. He expressed that merely leasing the territory or depending on defense agreements is insufficient for ensuring long-term security, pointing out ownership is crucial for full defense.

While addressing the press in Washington, Trump remarked that the US could secure Greenland “the easy way” or “the hard way,” which alarmed allied nations. He highlighted Greenland’s significant strategic position for national security, especially in terms of monitoring missile threats and military activities between North America and Europe.

Currently, a US military base operates at Pituffik, with American troops present there since World War Two. The US has agreements with Denmark that allow for troop deployment to Greenland if needed. Nonetheless, Trump maintained that such arrangements are inadequate, asserting that nations need to possess territory for effective defense.

In response, both Denmark and Greenland categorically rejected Trump’s claims, stating that the territory is not for sale. Danish officials warned that any attempt to lay claim could severely harm trans-Atlantic ties and NATO cohesion. Leaders in Greenland expressed that their destiny should solely depend on the will of the Greenlandic people.

Several NATO partners, including key European nations and Canada, voiced their support for Denmark. They underscored that Arctic security must be a collective effort among allies, respecting sovereignty and international laws as governed by the UN Charter.

Interest in Greenland has significantly risen lately due to its rich natural resources like rare earth minerals, uranium, and possible oil and gas reserves. Climate change-induced melting ice has made these assets more accessible, enhancing the island’s strategic importance on the global stage.

Trump’s renewed emphasis on Greenland has sparked an international debate, with critics warning that such rhetoric could heighten tensions and undermine established partnerships. Greenlandic leaders reasserted their desire for self-determination and independence, stating they do not wish to become part of the US or Denmark.
