WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a series of major tariffs targeting household products, heavy trucks, and pharmaceuticals, potentially increasing costs for American consumers and businesses.
Trump said in a Truth Social post that a 50% tariff will be imposed on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related products starting October 1, 2025. Additionally, upholstered furniture will face a 30% tariff.
The announcement comes as furniture prices have already risen sharply over the past year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), overall furniture costs increased 4.7% in August 2025 compared with the previous year, while living room and dining room furniture prices surged 9.5%.

“Foreign manufacturers have oversupplied the US market,” Trump said. “This is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process.”
Shares of major furniture retailers, including Wayfair (W), RH (RH), and Williams-Sonoma (WSM), fell sharply in after-hours trading following the announcement.
Heavy Truck Tariffs
Trump also announced a 25% tariff on heavy trucks imported into the United States, effective October 1. The measure aims to shield American truck manufacturers from foreign competition, particularly trucks manufactured in Mexico, which currently benefit from tariff-free import under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) if roughly two-thirds of parts are made in North America.
“Our Great Large Truck Company Manufacturers, such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks, and others, will be protected from the onslaught of outside interruptions,” Trump said. He added the tariffs are also intended to strengthen the financial health of American truckers and safeguard national security.
The heavy truck tariffs follow a Commerce Department investigation, ordered by Trump in April 2025, to assess whether imports pose a national security threat. Neil Shearing, chief economist at Capital Economics, noted that Mexico could be most affected, as 78% of imported heavy trucks come from there.
Background and Market Impact
Furniture prices had largely declined over the past two and a half years before Trump’s previous tariffs on China and Vietnam, the top U.S. furniture exporters, which shipped around $12 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2024.
Trump has also previously imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper, which increased production costs for U.S. truck manufacturers, in some cases making domestic trucks more expensive than foreign models.
In addition to furniture and trucks, Trump has threatened tariffs on lumber, semiconductors, and other products, though no specific timelines have been set.
It remains unclear whether the heavy truck tariff will fully exempt vehicles compliant with the USMCA. The measures announced Thursday are set to take effect October 1, 2025, and analysts warn they could further inflate costs for American consumers and supply chains.
