US President Donald Trump sparked fresh debate after posting a cryptic message on Truth Social shortly after the death of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho.”
“We’re Winning too much, it’s just not fair! President DJT,” Trump wrote, leading to speculation about Washington’s possible involvement in the operation that led to the cartel leader’s death.
El Mencho Dies After Mexican Special Forces Raid
Oseguera, 60, was the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most violent criminal groups. According to Mexico’s Defence Ministry, he was wounded during a special forces raid in the Pacific coastal town of Tapalpa, in Jalisco, and later died in custody.
His body was flown to Mexico City under heavy security and escorted by National Guard troops.
Mexico Denies Direct US Role
Following Trump’s post, Mexico’s embassy in Washington rejected claims of direct US involvement, calling such allegations “false.” The embassy clarified that the raid was planned and carried out by Mexican special forces.
However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that US agencies provided “complementary intelligence” under existing cooperation agreements.
Leavitt praised the Mexican military for the operation and said the US remains committed to ensuring “narcoterrorists” sending deadly drugs into America face justice.
Political Pressure on Mexico
The killing comes at a time when Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is facing strong pressure from Washington to intensify action against drug cartels, particularly those involved in fentanyl trafficking into the United States.
While US officials described the operation as a major blow to organized crime, the aftermath exposed security challenges. Cartel gunmen burned vehicles, blocked highways and set businesses on fire across at least six states. No civilian deaths were officially confirmed.
In the tourist city of Puerto Vallarta, visitors described scenes similar to a “war zone” as smoke rose over parts of the area. Major airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines, Aeromexico, and American Airlines, temporarily suspended flights due to security concerns.
Major Blow to Drug Cartels
El Mencho’s death is considered one of the most significant strikes against Mexican drug cartels in recent years. These groups are responsible for trafficking billions of dollars’ worth of drugs, especially fentanyl, into the US.
In earlier operations, Mexican authorities captured leaders of the rival Sinaloa Cartel, including Joaquín Guzmán, known as “El Chapo,” and Ismael Zambada. Both are currently imprisoned in the United States.
Authorities said daily life continued normally in most parts of Mexico, although some schools were closed as a precaution.
The situation remains tense as security forces continue efforts to stabilize affected areas following the high-profile cartel leader’s death.
