Human space travel is all about testing the limits of what people and machines can do. From quick visits to the Moon to spending many months on space stations, astronauts have shown that they can live far away from Earth for a long time. These long missions have helped us learn how the human body and mind handle life in space. Let’s take a look at the 10 longest times humans have stayed in space, and why these missions are so important for the future.
Valeri Polyakov, a Russian astronaut, stayed in space for 437 days and 18 hours. He lived on the Mir space station from January 1994 to March 1995. His mission helped scientists learn how space affects the body over a long time. His health stayed strong, showing that people can stay in space for more than a year—an important step for future trips to Mars.
Sergei Avdeyev, also from Russia, stayed in space for 379 days in 1998–1999, also on the Mir station. He stayed healthy and calm during his mission, helping scientists understand how isolation and weightlessness affect the human body.
In 1987–1988, cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Musa Manarov became the first people to stay in space for one full year. They lived on Mir for 365 days. Their mission proved that long stays in space are possible, and it helped with planning for future year-long missions.
Valery Ryumin spent 175 days in space during a mission in 1980. He helped fix problems on the Mir station and kept things running smoothly. His skills were very useful in keeping the mission safe and successful.
Scott Kelly (from the USA) and Mikhail Kornienko (from Russia) stayed on the International Space Station (ISS) for 340 days from 2015 to 2016. Scott’s twin brother stayed on Earth, so scientists could compare their health. This mission gave important data for planning future trips to Mars.
Christina Koch, an American astronaut, stayed on the ISS for 328 days from 2019 to 2020. She now holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. During her mission, she worked on hundreds of science experiments and showed how strong and capable women are in space.
In 2020, Russian astronauts Andrei Babkin and Anatoli Ivanishin spent 196 days on the ISS. They helped with research and station repairs, adding to Russia’s long experience in space missions.
In 2014, Oleg Artemyev spent 195 days in space. He took part in spacewalks and installed new tools and experiments on the ISS. His work helped us understand more about living in weightlessness for long periods.
Peggy Whitson spent 289 days in space during her longest single mission. In total, she spent 665 days in space—the most by any American astronaut and by any woman in the world. Her work and leadership have inspired many people and showed that women are leaders in space exploration.
As of 2025, Oleg Kononenko is still aboard the ISS and has already spent over 800 days in space. He may soon become the person with the most total time in space ever. He is helping train younger astronauts and continues to work on many space projects.
These long missions are not just about breaking records. They help scientists understand what happens to people in space. Some common problems include muscle loss, weaker bones, exposure to space radiation, and mental health issues like loneliness.
By learning more, we can make future missions safer. These astronauts are brave and help future explorers by testing new ways to live, eat, and stay healthy in space.
Space stations like Mir and the ISS are like homes in space. They are places where astronauts can live, work, and do science experiments for long periods. These stations help us test tools and systems needed for longer trips in the future—like going to the Moon or Mars.
Space stations are also important for learning how to fix things in space and how to live together in small places.
