Thailand is planning to host a Formula One street race in Bangkok by 2028. This plan came after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with F1 chief Stefano Domenicali on Tuesday at Government House. They talked about the chance of bringing the famous car race to Thailand’s capital.
After the meeting, Paetongtarn shared on her X account that the Thai government will carry out a study to see if the race is possible. The study will look at race routes, how much money is needed, and the benefits the race could bring to Thailand.

At present, Formula One has 24 races around the world. Four of them are in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Singapore Grand Prix, which is in Southeast Asia. Thailand already has an FIA-approved racetrack in Buriram in the northeast. This track is used for MotoGP motorbike races, but the plan is to hold the F1 race on the streets of Bangkok instead.
The Prime Minister said hosting an F1 race would help improve Bangkok's roads and attract more foreign tourists, especially wealthy visitors. The city is known for its traffic jams, and the race could push for better transport and road upgrades.
"I believe that all Thai people will benefit from this event. It will bring new jobs, more income, and introduce modern technology to our country," Paetongtarn said. She added that she is sure the project will be successful and will be a big chance for Thailand to hold a world-famous event.
F1 CEO Domenicali also praised the plan, calling it "impressive" on X. He said the idea of a Bangkok Grand Prix was exciting and showed Thailand’s interest in being part of the F1 calendar.
If the plan goes ahead, the Bangkok street race will join other F1 city races like those in Monaco, Singapore, and Las Vegas, giving race fans another thrilling event in Asia.
