The NASA-SpaceX mission successfully reached orbit after a smooth launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. This mission, which carries NASA astronaut Nick Hague as commander and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov as the mission specialist, is en route to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission holds added significance as it aims to bring back Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, who has been stranded aboard the ISS, next year in February.
The successful launch took place from Space Launch Complex 40, marking a major milestone for human spaceflight, as it is the first crewed mission to launch from this particular complex. NASA’s Crew-9 mission is expected to dock with the ISS on Sunday, September 29, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time (3:30 a.m. Monday IST). The new crew will embark on a five-month-long science mission aboard the space station.
“SpaceX Dragon spacecraft is on its way to the International Space Station. The new crew arrives at the orbiting lab for a five-month science mission,” NASA shared on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Originally scheduled to launch last Thursday, the mission was delayed due to adverse weather conditions brought about by Hurricane Helene, which impacted the Gulf Coast of Florida. Fortunately, the weather cleared, allowing the successful liftoff of the spacecraft.
The Crew-9 mission includes two empty seats, which are intended for NASA astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams. They will return to Earth in 2024, after being temporarily stranded due to a faulty Boeing Starliner spacecraft that carried them to the ISS. The Starliner, initially intended for human space travel, was declared unfit by NASA after its issues were uncovered during their eight-day sojourn in space. While both Williams and Wilmore returned safely to the ISS, the need for a reliable return spacecraft became paramount.
This latest mission by NASA and SpaceX is part of their continued collaboration to send astronauts to space and safely return them using the Dragon spacecraft. The Crew-9 mission also serves as a testament to the growing cooperation between NASA and SpaceX since their test flight in May 2020, which marked the first time astronauts were sent to the ISS aboard a Dragon spacecraft.
Additionally, NASA made adjustments to the Crew-9 lineup to accommodate the return of Williams and Wilmore. Initially, commander Zena Cardman and three-time shuttle astronaut Stephanie Wilson were slated to be part of the mission, but their participation was restructured to make space for Williams and Wilmore on their return journey to Earth. The crew will conduct important research during their stay aboard the ISS, contributing to ongoing scientific efforts.
This mission continues the legacy of collaborative space exploration, advancing both scientific knowledge and human spaceflight capabilities. The return of Sunita Williams is highly anticipated, with NASA and SpaceX working closely to ensure a successful and safe return journey for all astronauts involved.
