A significant blunder occurred during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) mistakenly introduced the South Korean delegation as North Korean. This error sparked widespread outrage in South Korea, leading to an official apology from the Olympic Committee.
During the ceremony, as the South Korean team made their entrance, sailing down the River Seine alongside other participating nations, the announcer incorrectly identified them as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea," which is the official name of North Korea. To compound the mistake, the same name was used when introducing the actual North Korean delegation.
The relationship between North and South Korea is fraught with hostility, rooted in the division of the Korean Peninsula following the Second World War. This longstanding history of conflict, including one of the most brutal wars in history and recent heightened tensions, made the mistake particularly sensitive and offensive to South Koreans.

The Olympic Committee expressed deep regret for the incident and assured South Korea that measures would be implemented to prevent such errors in the future. In a post on X in Korean, the IOC stated, "We deeply apologise for the mistake that occurred when introducing the Korean team during the opening ceremony broadcast."
South Korea expressed its disappointment over the incident, emphasizing the importance of accurately representing the two nations. IOC President Thomas Bach personally apologized to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, acknowledging that the people of South Korea were "very shocked and embarrassed" by the error.
Mark Adams, a spokesperson for the Olympic Committee, also addressed the mistake, calling it “clearly deeply regrettable.” He explained, “An operational mistake was made. We can only apologise, in an evening of so many moving parts, that this mistake was made.”
In response, South Korea’s Sports Ministry requested the country’s Foreign Ministry to file “a strong government-level complaint” with the French government, where the Olympics is being held.
This incident underscores the importance of accuracy and sensitivity in international events, particularly those involving nations with complex and contentious relationships. The apology from the IOC and the swift action taken to address the mistake highlight the gravity of the error and the commitment to preventing similar issues in the future.
