A Special Gathering of Leaders and Students
During this remarkable visit, His Highness was accompanied by other prominent leaders from Sharjah. Among them were His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, and Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the American University of Sharjah. Their presence added significance to the occasion, showing united support for the students and the marine sciences programme.
The meeting took place at the University of Exeter, one of the UK’s well-known academic institutions, where 26 students from the University of Khorfakkan are currently participating in a joint marine sciences programme.
Words of Encouragement from a Fatherly Leader
His Highness Sheikh Sultan addressed the students not just as a leader but as a caring and wise father figure. His words were filled with love, pride, and motivation. He praised the students for their dedication to their studies and highlighted how important this marine sciences programme is for the future of Sharjah, especially in protecting its coastal environments like Khorfakkan’s beaches.
He reminded the students that their hard work and curiosity are shaping the future of marine science in their country. “You represent the top level of scientific research,” he said. “We need your knowledge for the betterment of Khorfakkan’s environment—its trees, its mountains, and its precious sea, which holds treasures still hidden beneath the surface.”
Environmental Stewardship: A Core Mission
Sheikh Sultan expressed his deep concern for the environment and stressed the importance of preserving it. He shared how much value Sharjah places on its natural beauty—especially the sea, which remains largely unexplored and full of mystery.
“We are taking care of our natural surroundings,” he said, “but the job is not done. There are places in the sea that no one has studied yet. We want you, the youth, to become the pioneers who will explore, protect, and understand these places.”
Building Confidence Through Knowledge
Sharing personal reflections from his own student days, Sheikh Sultan offered powerful advice to the students. He encouraged them to build self-confidence through real knowledge—not just memorization. He urged them to keep knowledge alive in their minds, not just on paper.
“Be active, be alert, and don’t ignore even the smallest details,” he said. “What you learn in university is only a part of the bigger picture. Study beyond textbooks and lectures. Look at the world with curious eyes. That’s how you truly understand life.”
Sharjah’s Development Rooted in Identity and Pride
The Ruler of Sharjah then shifted the discussion to how every development project in the emirate is built with purpose and heart. He explained how each city in Sharjah is being improved with colorful and thoughtful projects that create pride among the people.
“From education to tourism, and from society to environmental initiatives—every project is designed to make people feel connected to their cities,” he said. “In Khorfakkan, you can see this progress clearly. Not only in science and technology, but in culture and history too.”
To support this, Sheikh Sultan shared the story of a local woman, Mrs. Fatima Al-Mughni. As a child, she witnessed the growth of Khorfakkan, and when the old market was rebuilt, she helped turn it into a living museum of the city’s traditions. “We want you to follow this example,” he told the students, “and take part in building your communities.”
He also encouraged them to become part of youth and women’s clubs, cultural centres, and other local groups, so they can play active roles in shaping their cities and spreading knowledge.
The Power of Engagement and Personality
Sheikh Sultan also spoke about personal growth. He emphasized that university life should not only be about academics but also about shaping one's character. He encouraged students to attend lectures, join seminars, participate in forums, and treat their university as a second home.
“It’s not enough to just go to classes,” he said. “You must be part of the entire learning environment. These experiences help you become strong and confident in any situation.”
Focus on Marine Science and Long-Term Vision
One of the highlights of the meeting was Sheikh Sultan’s announcement about the Sharjah Marine Research Centre, which was built with a budget of AED 100 million. This major facility will support diving training and scientific research in the marine field.
He explained that the centre is aligned with the goals of the marine sciences programme and is intended to give students hands-on opportunities to grow their knowledge and skills.
“The sea is a world of its own,” he said. “This centre will give you the tools to explore it scientifically and responsibly.”
Students Respond with Gratitude and Dedication
The students at the University of Exeter were deeply moved by the visit. They thanked His Highness for his continuous support, guidance, and encouragement. They shared how much this programme has taught them and how they are committed to using their education for the benefit of Sharjah and the wider UAE.
Many students expressed their excitement about returning home and applying what they’ve learned to real-world situations. They also promised to stay involved in their communities, help protect the environment, and continue to learn and grow.
About the Marine Sciences Programme
The marine sciences programme is a special collaboration between the University of Khorfakkan and the University of Exeter in the UK. The programme was designed to combine classroom learning with real-life training. It helps students learn about marine biology, environmental studies, and aquatic ecosystems.
Throughout the month of July, the 26 participating students attended lab workshops focused on environmental data analysis, scientific experiment planning, and marine life monitoring. They also attended expert lectures and visited coastal sites to observe biodiversity and sustainability efforts up close.
This hands-on approach makes the programme unique and helps students develop the skills they will need to become future leaders in environmental science and marine research.
A Memorable Moment to End a Special Day
Before concluding the meeting, His Highness Sheikh Sultan took a commemorative photo with the students. It was a proud moment for everyone present—a symbol of unity, vision, and shared purpose. His Highness then wished the students great success in their academic journey and a safe return home.
This visit was not just about education. It was about inspiration, leadership, and a deep love for the environment and the future of Sharjah. It reminded the students—and everyone watching—that knowledge has the power to transform individuals, communities, and nations.
