The ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, and Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Family and Community Council.

The forum brought together thinkers and innovators from across the world. Among them were Sal Khan, the Founder and CEO of Khan Academy, and William Kamkwamba, a Malawian inventor and innovator. Both speakers shared their personal journeys and highlighted the importance of education, innovation, and empowerment as the keys to building a sustainable and prosperous society.

Sal Khan: Education as the Path to Happiness

Sal Khan began the forum with his keynote titled “Happiness Economy”. He encouraged the audience to rethink the idea of progress. According to him, society should not only focus on economic growth but also on human happiness and well-being.

“I imagined a world where anyone, anywhere, can access knowledge and tuition for free, and I took it upon myself to realise that dream,” Khan said. He emphasized that education is not just an end goal but the beginning of change. Knowledge empowers people, helping them make better decisions, face challenges, and grow as individuals.

Khan explained how democratizing knowledge—making education accessible to everyone—helps connect different sectors of society. Governments and citizens can work together better when people are educated and informed. He said, “A happiness economy cannot flourish if people do not feel seen, heard, and empowered. Education gives individuals the tools to thrive, and a society that invests in learning invests in the happiness of all its people.”

His message was clear: quality education is the foundation of a happy and successful society. By giving everyone equal access to learning, governments can create citizens who are capable, informed, and ready to contribute to solutions for global challenges.

William Kamkwamba: Innovation From a Small Village

Following Sal Khan’s speech, William Kamkwamba shared his extraordinary journey from a small village in Malawi to international recognition. Kamkwamba’s story is one of determination, creativity, and the power of innovation.

He described his childhood in a rural farming community, where droughts and poor harvests made life difficult. “We depend on the land, and some years are better than others. This affects income and even food supplies for our families,” he explained.

Facing these hardships, Kamkwamba decided to find a solution. A single visit to a city library changed his life. There, he discovered a book on energy, which sparked the idea to build a windmill. Using scrap wood and an old bicycle, he created a working windmill that generated electricity for his home. His perseverance caught the attention of a local librarian and eventually local officials. The story of his innovation spread quickly, and journalists helped share it with the world.

Kamkwamba stressed the importance of mentorship and support for young innovators. “I thought about what would have made things easier for me, like mentors, tools, and guidance. That inspired me to start an organization to help young inventors follow their dreams,” he said. His work today focuses on supporting innovation and creativity among young people in Africa and beyond.

Lessons From the Forum: Knowledge and Innovation for a Better Future

Both speakers shared a central idea: empowering people through education and innovation can transform societies. While Sal Khan highlighted how learning can create a “happiness economy,” William Kamkwamba showed that human determination can turn challenges into opportunities.

Their speeches also carried a strong message for governments and leaders. Leaders are not just meant to share information, but to listen, support, and nurture talent in their communities. By investing in education and encouraging local innovation, governments can build stronger, more resilient societies.

The forum illustrated how education and innovation are interconnected. Knowledge allows people to think critically and solve problems, while innovation enables them to create practical solutions. Together, they form the foundation of sustainable development and a prosperous future.

Sharjah’s Role in Promoting Knowledge and Innovation

The presence of Sharjah’s leadership at the forum underlines the city’s commitment to education, innovation, and sustainable development. By hosting international figures like Sal Khan and William Kamkwamba, Sharjah is positioning itself as a hub for ideas, learning, and collaboration.

The forum also emphasized the importance of community engagement. When citizens are educated, inspired, and empowered, they can actively contribute to society’s well-being. The forum showcased how partnerships between governments, innovators, and educators can transform communities and create a brighter, more sustainable future.

A Vision for a Sustainable and Happy World

The 14th IGCF in Sharjah successfully highlighted the power of knowledge and innovation. Sal Khan and William Kamkwamba inspired attendees by showing that education and determination can overcome challenges and create positive change.

The forum’s message is simple but powerful: invest in people, nurture talent, and support innovation. By doing so, societies can achieve happiness, prosperity, and sustainability. The lessons from Sharjah are clear: when people are empowered, they can uplift entire communities, building a better world for everyone.

Sharjah’s hosting of this forum demonstrates its commitment to progress, human development, and a sustainable future, showing that leadership, education, and innovation can come together to create meaningful change.
