Russian forces have significantly escalated their assault on the strategic Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, according to Ukrainian officials. The intensified bombardments have led to the disruption of essential services, including cutting off water supplies and destroying a crucial overpass. This comes as Pokrovsk, already grappling with shortages of natural gas and electricity, faces severe degradation in living conditions.
As of Thursday, Ukrainian authorities have reported that Russian troops are advancing toward the city, now situated approximately five miles away. The escalating violence has prompted urgent calls for all residents to evacuate. The population of Pokrovsk has plummeted from around 62,000 at the start of August to just 18,000 by Wednesday, highlighting the rapid decline in civilian numbers amid the ongoing conflict.

Simultaneously, Russia is mounting a counteroffensive in the Kursk region, according to statements from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This counterattack follows reports from Russian military bloggers and analysts indicating that Ukrainian forces have lost control over several villages in recent engagements. The conflict in Kursk marks a significant escalation since Ukraine's initial gains in early August, when Ukrainian forces rapidly reclaimed approximately 500 square miles of territory and overran 100 towns and villages.
The Russian counteroffensive appears to target the western edge of the territory recently seized by Ukraine, with reports suggesting the reclamation of 10 villages. However, these reports have not been independently verified.
In Pokrovsk, the situation mirrors the grim fate of other cities in the eastern Donbas region, such as Sievierodonetsk and Bakhmut, which suffered severe infrastructure damage and civilian displacement due to Russian artillery and rocket attacks. Residents in Pokrovsk are now reliant on water from wells near apartment blocks, as most of the city is without natural gas or electricity.
Vadym Filashkin, head of the Ukrainian military administration for the Donetsk region, described the situation in Pokrovsk as dire and urged residents to evacuate. "Leaving is the only smart option," he said on Telegram, emphasizing the severity of the crisis.
The city has become the focal point of a protracted Russian offensive that shows no sign of abating, despite Ukraine's efforts to divert Russian forces by launching an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August. Over the summer, the Russian Air Force began using glide bombs—more destructive than ground-based artillery—against Pokrovsk, targeting infrastructure and residential areas as Russian forces closed in on the city.
Preparations for urban combat in Pokrovsk have been made, including the construction of concrete pillboxes along roadsides. Despite these measures, the city remains vulnerable. Recent bombardments have led to the collapse of an overpass, further complicating evacuation efforts. While civilians can still evacuate by car or bus using side roads, the destruction of key infrastructure and the loss of water signal a worsening of conditions in Pokrovsk.
The ongoing conflict underscores the high stakes in the battle for control over strategic locations in Ukraine, with significant humanitarian and military implications as the situation evolves.
