Russia has praised its long-standing and steadily advancing relationship with India, even as US President Donald Trump imposed high tariffs on Indian imports due to New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil. Russian officials emphasized that any attempts to harm this partnership would ultimately fail and highlighted the importance of cooperation between the two countries.
According to reports, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the ties between Russia and India reflect the spirit and traditions of friendship that have existed for decades. The ministry also noted that India's approach demonstrates strategic autonomy in international affairs, showing that India makes independent decisions based on its national interest.

Strong Russia-India Friendship
The Russian Foreign Ministry described the partnership with India as "reliable, predictable, and strategic." They emphasized that the relationship is based on the highest values of sovereignty and the primacy of national interests. In other words, both countries respect each other’s independence and work together to protect their mutual benefits.
Officials highlighted that India and Russia are working together on many large-scale projects across different sectors. These include:
Civilian and military production
Manned space missions
Nuclear power initiatives
Indian investments in Russian oil exploration projects
This cooperation also extends to financial systems. Russia and India are working to expand the use of their national currencies in trade, which can help reduce dependence on international currencies like the US dollar. They are also creating alternative transport and logistics routes to make trade smoother and more secure.
Context: US Tariffs on Indian Imports
The Russian Foreign Ministry’s remarks came at a time when the United States had urged the Group of Seven (G7) nations to impose tariffs on India and other countries that continue to buy oil from Russia.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had introduced additional duties on Indian imports, increasing tariffs by 25 percent on August 27. This made the total tariff 50 percent on certain products. Trump’s decision led to a strain in relations between the US and India, which have historically been strong allies.
Despite the tariffs, Russia continues to value its ties with India. The Russian ministry warned that any attempts to disrupt the cooperation between India and Russia are destined to fail, reinforcing the idea that the partnership is strong and long-lasting.
PM Modi and President Putin Show Unity
Amid these tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, earlier this month. During this summit, he met Russian President Vladimir Putin and demonstrated a friendly and united front. PM Modi shared pictures of his interactions with President Putin on X, showing them shaking hands and embracing each other.
This display of friendship and cooperation sent a clear message to the world about the strength of the India-Russia partnership, even in the face of US pressure.
Trump’s Response and Remarks
Days after the SCO summit, US President Donald Trump spoke about India’s oil imports from Russia. He said that he would “always be friends” with PM Modi but expressed his displeasure with India’s decision to continue importing Russian oil. Trump stated:
"I'll always be friends with PM Modi. He's a great Prime Minister. I'll always be friends, but I just don't like what he is doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion."
This statement shows that while the US is unhappy with India’s actions regarding Russian oil, it still considers India a strategic partner and values the long-standing ties between the two countries.
PM Modi’s Response to Trump
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded positively to Trump’s remarks. He said he “fully reciprocates” the US President’s sentiments and emphasized that India and the United States share a “very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”
According to PM Modi, the relationship between India and the US is strong and built on mutual trust. He acknowledged the value of cooperation with the US while also maintaining strong ties with Russia, showing India’s balanced approach to international relations.
India’s Strategic Autonomy
The ongoing situation highlights India’s commitment to strategic autonomy, a principle in foreign policy that allows India to make decisions based on its national interest rather than external pressures. By continuing its cooperation with Russia, India demonstrates that it will follow a path that benefits the country while also maintaining strong relations with other global powers like the US.
India’s approach is reflected in its multi-dimensional partnerships:
With Russia: Defense, nuclear energy, space, and oil exploration
With the US: Trade, technology, and global strategic cooperation
This balanced approach helps India strengthen its position in global affairs while protecting its economic and security interests.
Large-Scale Cooperation Between India and Russia
India and Russia have been working together on many significant projects, showcasing the depth of their partnership:
Civilian and Military Production: Russia and India collaborate in developing advanced military equipment and technology for civilian purposes.
Space Missions: The two countries have participated in manned space missions, strengthening their scientific and technological cooperation.
Nuclear Power: India’s nuclear energy sector benefits from Russia’s expertise, helping India meet its growing energy demands.
Oil and Investments: Indian investments in Russian oil projects strengthen economic ties and create mutual benefits.
Additionally, both nations are cooperating to improve payment systems by using their national currencies. This reduces dependency on international financial systems and makes trade between India and Russia more secure. They are also planning new transport and logistics routes, which can improve connectivity and trade efficiency.
Global Implications
The situation reflects broader geopolitical tensions. The US is attempting to pressure countries like India to reduce their dependence on Russian oil. However, Russia’s statements and India’s continued engagement show that their bilateral relations are resilient and are unlikely to be affected by outside interference.
The strong ties between India and Russia, combined with India’s careful balancing of its relationship with the US, highlight India’s growing influence in global diplomacy. India is demonstrating that it can maintain multiple strategic partnerships without compromising its national interests.
The Russia-India relationship remains strong despite the US tariffs on Indian imports. Russian officials have praised India’s commitment to the partnership, describing it as reliable, strategic, and based on mutual respect. Prime Minister Modi continues to maintain strong ties with both Russia and the US, showing India’s commitment to strategic autonomy.
Through cooperation in space, defense, energy, finance, and trade, India and Russia are building a partnership that withstands external pressures. At the same time, India’s positive engagement with the US highlights its ability to maintain balanced international relations, benefiting its economy and global standing.
