Russia has said the Taliban government in Afghanistan can now send an ambassador to Moscow. This happened just a few days after Russia stopped calling the Taliban a "terrorist group."

Since 2021, after the U.S. army left Afghanistan and the Taliban took control, Russia has been trying to make better ties with the group.

The Russian government said that some top Russian officials met with Afghan leaders. During this meeting, they told the Afghan side that Russia had decided to allow their embassy in Moscow to be led by an ambassador.

Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement:
“We told Afghan leaders that after Russia’s top court removed the ban on the Taliban, we will now allow their main office in Moscow to have an ambassador.”

The Afghan side said they were very thankful for this decision.

Russia sees the Taliban as a possible partner for trade and business. The Taliban also thanked Russia last week for removing the “terrorist” label.

In the past few years, Taliban leaders have traveled to Russia to attend big events.

Even though Russia is taking steps to work with the Taliban, it has not yet given full approval or recognition to their government. The Taliban is still not officially accepted by any country in the world.

Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said on Wednesday:
“The new rulers in Kabul are real. We must deal with them in a smart and practical way, not based on opinions or beliefs.”

Right now, the United Nations and other countries still call the Taliban leaders the “Taliban de facto authorities,” which means they are in control but not officially accepted as the legal government.
