As the crescent moon ushers in Ramadan 2025 across the Islamic world, the United Arab Emirates transforms into a realm of reflection, togetherness and deep-rooted heritage. Ramadan is expected to begin around March 1, 2025, with Eid al-Fitr anticipated around March 31, 2025, subject to the official moon sighting. During this time, both locals and visitors are welcomed into a world of spiritual practice, cultural celebration and adjusted daily life.
1. Fasting, Suhoor & Iftar
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. The day begins with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor, and ends with Iftar, usually breaking the fast with dates and laban (fermented milk) as is the tradition in the UAE. Many families gather for the first Iftar at the home of the family patriarch, following Emirati custom.
2. Tarawih Prayers & Night Devotions
Beyond the five daily prayers, Muslims perform Tarawih prayers in mosques each evening. In the last ten nights of Ramadan, many devote themselves to extra worship in hope of Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power. Recitation of the Quran is common across these nights.
3. Hagg Al-Layla & Pre-Ramadan Customs
A charming Emirati tradition before Ramadan is Hagg Al-Layla (mid-Sha’ban), when children dress in traditional clothes and go door to door singing or reciting poems, collecting sweets and nuts given by neighbours.
4. Iftar Cannon (Midfa al-Iftar)
One of the most iconic auditory signals in the UAE is the firing of a ceremonial cannon at sunset, marking the exact moment to break the fast. This tradition continues in many emirates and is cherished by residents and visitors alike.
5. Special Foods & Hospitality
Traditional Emirati dishes become more visible: harees, thareed, alqurs (a sweet bread with dates and cardamom) and other local delicacies are served across homes and in cultural Iftar tents. Hospitality is central—families host guests in their majlis (gathering rooms), and communal tables are common.
Public modesty: Eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public during daylight hours is considered disrespectful. Many restaurants close or serve behind curtains; non-Muslims are expected to eat discreetly in private areas until sunset.
Dress code: Dress modestly—cover shoulders and knees, avoid revealing or tight clothes, especially in religious or public areas.
Business & working hours: Government offices and private sectors often reduce working hours by about two hours daily during Ramadan.
Entertainment & noise: Live music and loud celebrations are often restricted. Many venues tone down audio or shift to more subdued programming.
Charity & giving: Ramadan emphasizes zakat (obligatory charity) and sadaqah (voluntary giving). Many UAE residents engage in community feeding, distribution to workers and helping the less fortunate.
When Ramadan ends, joyous celebration begins with Eid al-Fitr. Muslims attend a special Eid prayer early in the morning, often in large congregations at mosques or open fields. New clothes, sweets and gift giving are traditions. Homes are decorated, streets filled with family visits, and cultural programs take center stage. Public events, fairs and festivals spring up. Malls and shopping centers offer special sales, and many communities organize family-friendly activities. The mood is festive and communal.
Plan your evenings: Most life shifts to after sunset. Night markets, cultural performances and Iftar tents operate late.
Book in advance: Popular Iftar experiences, especially in hotels, require reservations well ahead.
Respect local customs: Avoid eating or drinking in public during daylight; use private dining spots.
Temper expectations in daytime: Some attractions, shops or services may operate reduced hours.
Join cultural Iftar or mosque tours: Many centers welcome non-Muslim visitors to cultural sessions or shared Iftar dinners.
Visit heritage sites: Heritage Villages and cultural centers offer chances to see traditional Emirati life and crafts.
Use mild weather to your advantage: Since Ramadan 2025 falls in cooler months, evening strolls or desert experiences are more pleasant.
Respect prayer times: Be aware of prayer schedules; many roads, shops or services pause briefly.
